Men's Golf Adds Another Student-Athlete For 2013-14 Season

April 17, 2013
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Kevin Chen has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Oregon State men's golf program for the 2013-14 season, head coach Jon Reehoorn announced on Wednesday.
Chen, a native of Vaerlose, Denmark, will join Alex Franklin from San Rafael, Calif., Conner Kumpula from Albany, Ore., and Kevin Murphy from Rogue River, Ore., who signed this past November, as freshmen on the roster next season.
"Oregon State is a great place having many Danish players successfully attend the school," Chen said. "The climate, school, coach, facilities - basically everything seems to fit perfect into my personality, and I'm looking forward to joining the team in September."
"As a member of the Danish National Team, Kevin has had the opportunity to compete and travel all over Europe and Asia," Reehoorn said. "Because of his International team experience, Kevin will understand what it means to play team golf, which will be important for our success and his. Kevin brings a strong work ethic along with a desire to be one of the best and will be a great fit for what we are working to achieve at Oregon State.
"In the past our program has benefited from the influence of an International presence on the roster, including two Danes, Morten Madsen, and hopefully Kevin helps to continue this successful trend."
Chen attends Marie Kruses Skole in Farum, Denmark and has been a member of Vaerlose Golfklub since 2007, which was promoted to the First Division in 2009. He was the senior club champion in 2011 and 2012 and the junior club champion from 2009-12, and has been the team captain for the past year.
He has six wins, and 10 top-5 finishes, in Danish and International competition, and holds the course record at Vaerebro GolfKlub with a 6-under 66. This past year he tied for second at the Danish Golf Union Elite Senior Tour Section with a 3-under 213 and finished sole third at the Singha Thailand Junior World Golf Championship.
His biggest athletic thrills to date are "making a hole-in-one during the semifinals of the National Junior Championship and participating in the European Boys Team Championship in 2011."
Oregon State, which is going for a seventh consecutive trip to the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships, will lose seniors Nick Chianello, Matt Rawitzer and Nick Sherwood after this season.
