WALNUT CREEK, Calif. – Senior gymnast Stephanie McGregor led five Oregon State gymnasts who were recognized for their work in the classroom when the 2013 Pac-12 Conference Women’s Gymnastics All-Academic teams were announced today by Commissioner Larry Scott.
Stephanie McGregor received first team honors for the third time in her career, while Taylor Keeker and Katelyn Ohlrich earned second team. Chelsea Tang and Cerise Witherby were named honorable mention. It is the first academic awards for Keeker, Ohlrich, Tang and Witherby.
To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average and be either a starter or significant contributor.
McGregor, a fifth-year senior studying Bioengineering in OSU’s Honors College, performed in the Beavers’ bars lineup in all 12 meets and in the vault lineup eight times. The Calgary, Alberta native posted a career-best 9.950 on the bars to help the Beavers set the school-record of 49.675 on the apparatus en route to winning the Pac-12 Championships in March. This is the third time McGregor has been a first team all-academic selection.
Keeker, a sophomore from Keizer, Ore., was the primary alternate on the vault in 2013 and also provided depth to the bars lineup. Keeker, a Human Development and Family Sciences major, performed exhibitions on vault five times and on the bars twice this year establishing season-bests of 9.70 and 9.80 respectively.
Ohlrich, a sophomore from Bend, Ore., earned a spot on the balance beam lineup and hit her routine in all 12 meets in 2013. Ohlrich, a Civil Engineering major, established a career-best 9.85 in a high-pressure meet at Utah in January. She matched her personal-high twice late in the season scoring 9.85 at the Pac-12 Championships to help the Beavers to the conference title and again at the NCAA Corvallis Regionals when the Beavers tied a season-high.
Tang, a sophomore studying Exercise and Sport Science, became a regular in the all-around in 2013 and qualified as an individual to the NCAA Championships later this week. Tang, a native of Eugene, Ore., performed in the all-around in eight of the final nine meets of the year and established career-highs on every event including 9.90’s on vault and beam and 9.875’s on bars and floor exercise. She also set a personal-best of 39.400 in the all-around.
Witherby, a sophomore from Huntington Beach, Calif., performed primarily on the floor in 2013 as well as the primary alternate on the beam. Witherby established a career-best of 9.825 on the floor at the Pac-12 Championships and matched it at the NCAA Corvallis Regionals.
Three Oregon State gymnasts – Brittany Harris, Makayla Stambaugh and Chelsea Tang – are set to compete at the NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Championships hosted by UCLA beginning Friday, April 19 at 6 p.m.
