Chianello Tied For Second, Men's Golf In Ninth At Fresno State Classic

FRESNO, Calif. - Senior Nick Chianello shot his best career round at Oregon State on Monday, a 6-under 66, and is tied for second place through 36 holes at the Fresno State Lexus Classic. The Beavers sit in ninth place with the final 18 holes scheduled for Tuesday.
Chianello had seven birdies and just one bogey in the morning round at the par-72, 6,570-yard Belmont Country Club and followed that up with a 1-under 71 in the afternoon to put him in a tie for second with a 7-under 66-71--137. He is four strokes behind clubhouse leader Michael Kim of California, who shot an 11-under 68-65--133, and tied with Golden Bear golfers Brandon Hagy and Michael Weaver.
As a team, Oregon State finished the 36-hole opening day with a 5-over 364-361--725 in the 6-count-5 format with only two strokes separating the Beavers and four teams ahead of them. California, the No. 1-ranked team in the nation, should have been given the trophy after the first day as the Golden Bears shot a 26-under 694 to give them a 22-stroke advantage over second-place Fresno State, which finished with a 4-under 716.

Chianello had fired two 4-under 66's as a Beaver with both coming during his junior season - at the U.S. Intercollegiate and NCAA Stanford Regional. His best round as a collegian was an 8-under 64 at the Palouse Cougar Collegiate while playing at the University of Portland.
Senior Matt Rawitzer shot a 2-under 70 with six birdies in the morning and a 2-over 74 in the afternoon to put him in a tie for 25th with an even-par 144. Freshman Tyler Carlson and senior Nick Sherwood are both tied for 42nd with a 2-over 146, as Carlson shot a 4-over 76 in the morning before rebounding with a 2-under 70 in the afternoon and Sherwood also played better in the second round with a 1-under 71 after opening with a 3-over 75.
Freshmen Brian Jung and Chris Tedesco each shot a 9-over 153, with Jung going 77-76 and Tedesco shooting 78-75, to put them in a tie for 90th place.
The final 18 holes of the tournament will be played on Tuesday with tee times off the first and 10th holes beginning at 8 a.m. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
