EUGENE, Ore. - David Fink had seven birdies in the afternoon round of the Oregon Duck Invitational on Monday to finish with a 3-under 69 and lead the Oregon State men's golf team to a tie for fourth place in the 15-team field with the final 18 holes slated for Tuesday.
The Beavers finished the opening day of the 54-hole tournament with a 5-over 294-287--581 at the par-72, 7,020-yard Eugene Country Club to put them in a tie for fourth place with Saint Mary's. Oregon dominated the first day on its home course, shooting a 9-under 567 to hold the clubhouse lead, while SMU is second (2-under 574) and Washington is third (even-par 576).
Fink, who missed the past two tournaments with an illness, shot an even-par 72 in the morning that included three birdies and three bogeys. He went birdie crazy in the afternoon, throwing seven of them on his scorecard, but took a triple-bogey on the par-3 fifth hole and a bogey that kept him from a better score. He's still in a tie for seventh place with a 3-under 141 and in contention for medalist honors.

Sophomore Scott Kim was steady in both rounds on Monday, as he shot a 1-over 73 in the morning and an even-par 72 in the afternoon to put him in a tie for 23rd with a 1-over 145. He had seven birdies on the day and stayed away from the big numbers with nothing worse than a bogey.
Senior Nick Chianello carded five birdies in the morning round to finish with an even-par 72, but dropped four strokes in the afternoon, to put him in a tie for 36th with a 4-over 148. Senior Matt Rawitzer struggled in the morning with five bogeys and a double for a 6-over 78, but got back on track in the afternoon to shoot an even-par 72 with three birdies and three bogeys. Senior Nick Sherwood had an up-and-down round in the morning that ended with a 5-over 77 before bouncing back to post a 2-over 74 after the lunch break.
Competing as individuals, redshirt freshman Brian Jung shot a 6-over 74-76--150 for a tie for 50th place and freshman Tyler Carlson finished with a 10-over 74-80--154 to put him in a tie for 68th.
