PERSONAL--Born 11/11/79 in Portland, OR...son of James Massey and Genice Allen...he has two sisters, Kamai, 22; and Charisse, 16...James is in the College of Liberal Arts and is a liberal studies major...enjoys basketball, video games and music...Shawn Kemp is his favorite athlete...scoring his first touchdown as a defensive player has been his top athletic thrill as a prep...he selected OSU because, "it is a good school and I want to be part of a team that is on the rise."
OSU--(1999--Sophomore)--After spending the 1998 season as the backup to Bryan Jones at weak linebacker, the position belonged to James when spring drills opened...James continued to improve and he will report to fall camp as the Beavers' starting weak linebacker...his skills improved with each week of spring drills...recorded 5 tackles for the Black squad in OSU's final spring game...James will be the least experienced of the Beavers' starting linebackers heading into the 1999 season...hasn't come close to reaching his full potential yet...in the weight room, James has posted personal bests of 270 pounds in the hang clean; 325 in the bench press; 435 in the back squat and 285 in the incline...produced a vertical jump best of 36.50 inches and was tested for only 4.05 percent body fat.
(1998--Freshman)--The redshirt season was very good for James...he gained 20 pounds and became much stronger in the weight room...as a result, he entered spring drills ready to compete for playing time and compete he did...he was one of the biggest surprises of the spring and he reported to fall camp as the No. 2 weak linebacker, behind Bryan Jones...James' stock definitely went up during spring drills...displayed great quickness and straight away speed, plus he is a "hitter"...James played in all 11 games as a freshman in 1998 as a backup weak linebacker and on special teams...produced 52 defensive points in 1998, with 9 solo tackles, 12 assisted tackles, and he broke up one pass and intercepted a pass against Nevada (9/5) in the season opener...his best individual game was against Nevada, producing 24 of his 52 points...had 3 solo tackles, 2 assisted tackles, intercepted a pass, returning it 15 yards, and broke up one pass...had 5 tackles at Arizona State (9/26) and four tackles vs. Stanford (10/10).
(1997--Redshirt Freshman)--James spent the 1997 season as a redshirt linebacker while playing on the scout team...James had an impressive redshirt season.
JEFFERSON HIGH SCHOOL, Portland, OR--(1995-96)--James did not play varsity football for Jefferson until the middle of his junior year and he started from that point on...earned first-team All-PIL honors as a senior outside linebacker...runs the 40 in 4.6...led the Democrats in tackles as a senior with 85 in 9 games, including 11 quarterback sacks, 12 tackles for loss, 4 fumble recoveries and 2 pass interceptions...he was a starter on the basketball team and was a two-year track and field letterman, participating in the long and triple jumps, the hurdle races and the sprints...played football for Coach Mark Pinder...selected OSU over Washington State...Coach Pinder said, "James is a very tough kid, very coachable and loves to compete. He is 6-3, 195 right now and I think he will play at around 225 and be a quality outside linebacker and pass rusher."
