PERSONAL—Born 9/5/82 in Santa Ana, CA…son of Kevin Farrell and Linda Johnson…his father is an executive sales manager and his mother is a paraeducator…he has two brothers, Jordan, 17, and Max, 10…he has two sisters, Jenna, 12 and Kennedy, 4…his father played football at Fresno State for Dennis Erickson and later played professional football…Josh is a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes…he enjoys outdoor activities…Walter Payton is his favorite athlete…he is in the College of Business and is a business administration major…he entered OSU with a perfect 4.0 GPA out of high school…he was named the Rotary Student of the Year…he received the all-school calculus award and was a four-time top 25 academic scholar athlete award winner…he selected OSU because, “good environment, great football program and great coaches.”
OSU—(2002—Freshman Redshirt)—Josh spent the 2001 season as a redshirt tailback...he had ACL reconstruction knee (left) surgery on November 21, 2001...due to the knee surgery, Josh did not participate in contact during spring drills...he will be listed No. 3 on the depth chart at tailback when fall camp opens...based on his play as a redshirt freshman, Josh is expected to be a factor in the tailback rotation this fall...he is a hard runner with good quickness...due to his knee surgery, Josh was only able to participate in the bench press lifting during winter conditioning and posted a best of 350 pounds.
(2001—Freshman)—Josh reported to OSU for the start of fall camp on August 6 as a tailback...he was a redshirt during the 2001 season...he was participating on the offensive scout team during the fall until suffering a season-ending knee (left) injury during the first week of November...Josh had ACL reconstruction surgery on November 21, 2001.
ELSINORE HIGH SCHOOL, Wildomar, CA—Rated as the 79th best athlete in California by SuperPrep Magazine…ran the 40 in 4.55 in high school with 33.7-inch vertical jump…selected OSU over UCLA, Arizona, San Diego State, Navy, Oregon, Stanford, Army, New Mexico, Colorado State and Notre Dame…rated as the 81st best running back in the nation by Rivals.com…rated as 75th top player on the West Coast by SuperPrep Magazine in its 2000 preseason issue…selected as a Western All-Region running back by PrepStar Magazine…bench pressed 350 as junior and had a best of 425 in the back squat…as junior, carried the ball 141 times for 1,175 yards (8.3 average) and 14 touchdowns with 20 receptions for 286 yards and a three touchdowns…also played outside linebacker and had two interceptions...he earned all-area honors as a junior…as a senior, his Elsinore High School Tigers finished 12-2 and he rushed for 1,707 yards on 246 carries (6.9 average) and 22 touchdowns…caught 20 passes for 364 yards (18.2 average) and three touchdowns…in 12 games as a sophomore, he carried the ball 145 times for 714 yards (4.9 average) and seven touchdowns…he caught 13 passes for 163 yards and a touchdown…he also returned four kickoffs for 220 yards (55.0 average), including a 98-yard TD return…produced 51 career touchdowns and 4,583 all-purpose yards…his best individual game as a junior (1999) was against Sultana High School when he carried the ball 26 times for 256 yards (9.8 average) and three touchdowns…his best outing as a senior in 2000 was against Norco High School in the quarterfinals of CIF playoffs when he gained 236 yards and scored four touchdowns…Josh was an all-around athlete at Elsinore High School, lettering three times in football, twice in basketball and twice in track and field…he was a three-time all-league (Southwestern) pick in football…he was named the team MVP as a junior and senior…named team scholar athlete following his junior year…named all-valley Player of the Year in 2000, as well as first-team all-county and first team All-CIF (Division 7) and honorable mention all-state…his weightlifting bests of 350 (bench) and 425 (squat) were good enough for him to be named to Student Sports All-American strength team…Elsinore finished 12-2 his senior year and was ranked as high as 14th in California before finishing ranked 20th in California by Cal-Hi Sports…he was a member of the 4x100 relay team that broke a school sophomore track record and on the team that broke a varsity 4x100 relay record…he played baseball (catcher) as a freshman and was named the freshman Rookie of the Year…played for Coach Mark Chandler at Elsinore… “He is just an all-around great athlete,” said Chandler. “He works hard, he plays hard and generally does everything you need to do to be very successful.”
