Beavers Play Well To Move Up Three Spots At San Diego Classic

CHULA VISTA, Calif. - Senior Nick Sherwood and sophomore Scott Kim each fired a 2-under 70, and senior Nick Chianello carded an even-par 72 to help the Oregon State men's golf team move up three spots and finish in seventh place at the San Diego Classic on Tuesday.
The Beavers entered Tuesday's final round in 10th place but carded their best score in the 54-hole event with a 1-over 289 to finish with a 28-over 302-301-289--892 and leapfrog Arizona, Louisville and Pepperdine. San Diego State won the team title with an even-par 864, while TCU and Arizona State tied for second with a 3-over 867.
"I'm so proud of the effort of the team today," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "We needed a round like we had today in a huge way. They knew it and they responded."
Sherwood had five birdies and Kim added four on Tuesday at the par-72, 7,033-yard San Diego Country Club to shoot the Beavers' only sub-par rounds of the tournament. Both players skyrocketed up the leaderboard as Kim finished in a tie for 25th place with a 6-over 78-74-70--222 and Sherwood moved up to a tie for 33rd with a 7-over 78-75-70--223.

Chianello was steady as a rock all three rounds as he shot a pair of 1-over 73's on Monday before improving a shot on Tuesday with a 72 that included four birdies and four bogeys. He had 11 birdies over the two days and finished in sole 12th place with a 2-over 73-73-72--218. Chianello now has a tie for eighth, a tie for fifth and sole 12th finishes in his last three tournaments.
"Yesterday hole six ate us for lunch, and today we had two birdies when we really needed it from Tyler and Nick Sherwood," Reehoorn said. "Nick Chianello hit a hybrid from 250 on 17 to set up a two-putt birdie that might be the birdie that gets us going in the right direction."
Freshman Tyler Carlson finished in a tie for 62nd place with a 15-over 74-80-77--231 and senior Matt Rawitzer was two strokes back with a 17-over 77-79-77--233 for a tie for 68th.
"We've got a lot of work to do still, but we can get ready for finals now and then be ready for Eugene feeling a little better about ourselves," Reehoorn concluded.
The Beavers return to action in two weeks when they travel to Eugene to compete at the Oregon Duck Invitational on Monday, March 25 and Tuesday, March 26.
