WAIKOLOA, Hawai'i - David Fink shot a 2-under 70 in the second round of the Amer Ari Invitational in Waikoloa, Hawai'i on Thursday, and is only one stroke behind a pair of golfers with the final 18 holes slated for Friday on the Big Island.
Fink started on the 10th hole at the par-72, 7,074-yard Waikoloa Kings' Course and carded birdies on the par-3 15th, par-5 18th, par-4 first and par-4 fifth holes, before taking a pair of bogeys to finish his round. The junior lefty enters the final round tied for third with five golfers who all trail Cody Gribble of Texas and Pontus Widegren of UCLA by a single stroke.
"Even without his best, Dave was able to get himself into a good position heading into tomorrow," Reehoorn said. "It was a struggle off the tee on the back nine, but his short game is so good he is still able to post a good score. That is a sign of a player who is maturing and understanding how to score without his best ball striking, and that is what it takes to compete with the best."
As a team, Oregon State fell from 11th to 12th place despite finishing a stroke better in the second round than it did on the opening day. The Beavers shot an even-par 288 on Thursday, which was due in big part to an impressive 4-under 68 by senior Matt Rawitzer and Fink's 70, but they had to take a 6-over in the team score.

Senior Nick Sherwood shot an even-par 72 with a pair of birdies and bogeys on Thursday after opening with a 2-over 74 to put him in a tie for 55th with a 2-over 146. Senior Nick Chianello and freshman Chris Tedesco each shot a 6-over 78 in the second round, as Chianello surprisingly only had one birdie and Tedesco had two double-bogeys.
"For the first event of the year it feels like we have done a lot of good things, but also have made some sloppy mistakes," Reehoorn said. "We've got one round left to clean up these mistakes and leave Hawai'i feeling good about our first event. It feels like we are right there; we just need to believe we can do it."
Rawitzer was steady all day as he had a birdie on the par-4 12th, an eagle on the par-5 18th and a birdie on the par-5 second to get to 4-under. He had his only bogey of the day on the par-4 eighth but came right back with a birdie on the par-4 ninth to finish with a 68. He skyrocketed up the individual leaderboard from a tie for 51st to a tie for 16th with a 3-under 73-68--141.
"It's great to see Matt play so well," Reehoorn said. "He has worked very hard over the offseason to get his game back into the form of last spring, and he is very important to our success."
It's been quite a homecoming for Fink, who grew up in Kailua, Hawai'i, as he opened the 23rd annual event with a 4-under 68 in front of friends and families and backed that up with another sub-par round on Thursday. In the two previous years at the Amer Ari Invitational, Fink finished in a tie for 41st as a freshman and a tie for 76th as a sophomore with only one of the six rounds in red figures.
He enters Friday's final round looking to become the first Oregon State golfer to win a tournament outright since October of 2009 when Diego Velasquez won the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate with a 10-under 206. Fink's best career finish is a tie for second place at the Gifford Collegiate this past November.
The final round begins with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. Hawai'i time on Friday. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
