WAIKOLOA, Hawai'i - Junior David Fink carried over his career-best finish in the fall's final tournament to the spring's opening event, as he carded a 4-under 68 in the first round of the 23rd Annual Amer Ari Invitational on Wednesday.
Fink had eight birdies, two bogeys and a double at the par-72, 7,074-yard Waikoloa Kings' Course to put him in a tie for second place with two rounds to play. The native of Kailua, Hawi'i finished in a tie for second at the Gifford Collegiate last November for his best collegiate finish and is off to a hot start to the spring season.
"It's great to see David continue his good play from CordeValle," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said about the fall's final tournament. "I know coming back to his home state and playing well is very important to him. He's done a nice job of making sure not to place too much pressure on himself and just play golf."
As a team, Oregon State is in 11th place in the 20-team field after shooting a 1-over 289. The Beavers started on the back nine and got to as low as 8-under, and a tie for second, before giving shots back on the first nine holes on the course on the Big Island.

"For our first round of the season I thought we did a very good job of coming out ready to play," Reehoorn said. "We played the easy stretch of the course first and took advantage. We did not finish the way we needed, but we have a lot of positives to take from today.
"We need to be 100 percent committed to each shot and execute the game plan better. If we can do this, we'll eliminate the big numbers and be able to compete with the elite teams here."
Fink is tied for second with seven other golfers and only a stroke back of first round leader Daniel Jannevret of TCU who finished with a 5-under 67. Fink had two top-10 finishes in the fall and now has 22 career sub-par rounds after Wednesday's 4-under 68.
Senior Matt Rawitzer battled back from a tough start with two birdies and four pars over his final six holes to finish with a 1-over 73, while fellow seniors Nick Chianello and Nick Sherwood each shot a 2-over 74 to join Fink and make up Oregon State's top four scores.
Rawitzer had four birdies, three bogeys and a double, and Sherwood finished with three birdies, three bogeys and one double. Chianello had his share of birdies with six in the opening round, but he took three double-bogeys and a pair of bogeys to keep him out of red numbers.
Freshman Chris Tedesco was competing as a member of the team for the first time in his career after playing in one event in the fall as an individual. The nerves didn't bother him early as he got to 3-under on three separate occasions before shooting 7-over on his final five holes to finish with a 4-over 76. He proved that he can throw darts at the flags as he equaled Chianello with six birdies.
UCLA and TCU are tied for first after the opening round with an 11-under 277, while Texas (9-under 279), Washington (8-under 280) and Auburn (7-under 281) round out the top five.
The second round begins with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. Hawai'i time on Thursday. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
