PALM DESERT, Calif. - Nick Chianello and Nick Sherwood each shot an even-par 72 and Matt Rawitzer added a 1-over 73 on Sunday to lead the Oregon State men's golf team to a fifth-place finish at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate.
The Beavers finished the three-day, 54-hole tournament with an 11-over 291-291-293--875 at the par-72, 7,305-yard Classic Club to finish fifth in the 17-team field and just one stroke behind San Francisco and Texas Tech, which tied for third with a 10-over 874. TCU took the team title with a convincing 19-under 845 and St. Mary's finished second with a 6-over 870.
"Our three seniors were great today when we really needed it," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "As our first guy got to 17 and our last to 15, the wind started blowing about 25 miles per hour and gusting more. The wind and playing 16 dead into the wind have left a bad taste in the guys' mouths, but overall I felt like we did a lot of things well."
Sherwood posted the best finish in his career with a tie for fifth place after a 1-under 73-70-72--215 to better the tie for sixth he had as a sophomore at the Bandon Dunes Championship in 2011. Chianello finished a stroke back with an even-par 70-74-72--216 that put him in a tie for eighth place.
Rawitzer did his best work on the front nine over the weekend and finished in a tie for 22nd place with a 4-over 74-73-73--220, while David Fink posted an 8-over 74-74-76--224 for a tie for 36th to end his streak of two consecutive second-place finishes. Brian Jung struggled in the final round and tied for 70th overall with a 17-over 77-76-80--233.
Sherwood led the Beavers with 10 birdies over the three days, while Chianello and Jung each had nine, and Rawitzer and Fink each finished with eight.
"We have been missing production from the five spot the last two events," Reehoorn said. "Not sure who it will be moving forward, but the spot is there just waiting for someone to step up and take it."
Oregon State has a week off before returning to action Monday, March 4 and Tuesday, March 5 at the Fresno State Lexus Classic, a tournament the Beavers won last season.
