PALM DESERT, Calif. - Senior Nick Sherwood fired a 2-under 70 in the second round of the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate on Saturday, and the Oregon State men's golf team shot a 3-over 291 for the second consecutive day to remain in fifth place with 18 holes to play.
The Beavers sit in fifth place, and just four strokes out of third, after posting a 6-over 291-291--582 in the first two rounds at the par-72, 7,305-yard Classic Club. The three-day, 54-hole tournament concludes Sunday with TCU holding a commanding 11-stroke advantage to dominate the 17-team field.
"The score was the same, but the team played better today," Oregon State Jon Reehoorn said. "With tough hole locations and fast greens, the course played a little harder today. I think we are very close to doing something very good. It might not be tomorrow, but I'm excited for how the guys are playing and what is to come in the next couple of months."
Sherwood had five birdies and three bogeys on Saturday to equal fellow senior Nick Chianello's opening-round 70, and move into a tie for ninth place with a 1-under 73-70--143. Chianello finished with a 2-over 74 on the second day and is tied for 11th with an even-par 70-74--144.
Senior Matt Rawitzer has been steady both days and is tied for 24th with a 3-over 74-73--147, while junior David Fink is only a stroke back with a 4-over 74-74--148 for a tie for 26th. Redshirt freshman Brian Jung is tied for 59th with a 9-over 77-76--153.
The final round will begin at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday off the first and 10th holes. Live scoring will be available on GameBook at the following link.
