PALM DESERT, Calif. - Senior Nick Chianello fired a 2-under 70 at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate on Friday to lift the Oregon State men's golf team to fifth place after the first round of the three-day, 54-hole tournament.
Chianello had had four birdies and two bogeys at the par-72, 7,305-yard Classic Club to put him in a tie for fifth place and just two shots back of the lead. It's his best score of the spring season and his seventh sub-par round in his senior campaign.
Oregon State needed Chianello's 2-under round to finish the opening day with a 3-over 291 and in sole fifth place. TCU went birdie crazy on Friday to crush the 17-team field with an 11-under 277, while St. Mary's, San Francisco and Texas Tech are all tied for second with a 4-under 284, seven strokes better than the Beavers.
"I felt like we did a lot of good things today, but we just didn't finish like we needed to at the end," Oregon State head coach Nick Chianello finished his round like we need everyone to; with a bit of a killer instinct. We can't just play the last few holes to stay where we are. We need to keep playing just like we did on the first hole."
Senior Nick Sherwood shot a 2-under 34 going out but had a 3-overr 39 coming in to finish with a 1-over 73 for a tie for 24th place. Senior Matt Rawitzer and junior David Fink both had two birdies and two bogeys, including one on the par-5 18th hole, to finish in a tie for 36th with a 2-over 74. Redshirt freshman Brian Jung had three birdies, but took two double-bogeys, to finish with a 5-over 77 for a tie for 64th.
Clement Sordet of Texas Tech and Julien Brun of TCU hold the clubhouse individual lead with a 4-under 68.
The Beavers will be paired with Idaho and Texas Tech in Saturday's second round and start on the first hole beginning at 8:20 a.m. Live scoring will be available on GameBook at the following link.
