ERIN, Wis. – Kevin Murphy and Brian Jung each fired a 1-over 73 in the final round of the Erin Hills Intercollegiate on Tuesday to help the Oregon State men’s golf team finish the three-day, 54-hole event in seventh place.
The Beavers concluded play with a 14-over 289-295-294--878 at the par-72, 7,234-yard Erin Hills Golf Course to finish 10 strokes behind sixth-place St. John’s and 15 shots better than eighth-place Michigan. Stanford ran away with the team title with a 13-under 851, while UCLA was second (5-under 859) and SMU and Oklahoma tied for third (1-under 863).
Senior David Fink was Oregon State’s top player on the individual leaderboard, finishing in a tie for 13th place with a 1-over 72-70-75--217. He was unable to find the magic he had in the second round when he carded a 2-under 70 on Monday, as the lefty had three birdies for the second consecutive day but also took six bogeys.
After opening the tournament with a pair of even-par 72’s, junior Alex Franklin shot a 2-over 74 in the final round but still posted a top-20 finish with a tie for 19th with a 2-over 72-72-74--218.
Murphy, a freshman from Rogue River, Ore., and Jung, a sophomore Coquitlam, B.C., both had two birdies on Tuesday en route to their 1-over 73. Murphy finished the tournament in a tie for 25th place overall with a 4-over 73-74-73--220, while Jung moved up eight spots into sole 41st with a 9-over 72-80-73--225.
Freshman Conner Kumpula, who was making his Oregon State debut, had his best round on the final day to finish in a tie for 52nd with a 13-over 76-79-74--229.
Patrick Rodgers of Stanford won medalist honors with a 7-under 68-72-69--209 to finish ahead Ryan McCormick of St. John’s (4-under 212).
UCLA’s Jonathan Garrick broke the Erin Hills course record on the final day with a 7-under 65. The previous record was 66, set by Ben Geyer and Mike Ignasiak at the 2011 U.S. Amateur Championship. Fellow Bruin Lorens Chan broke the Erin Hills back-nine record by carding a 30 on the final day.
The Beavers will compete in their final tournament of the fall season next Monday and Tuesday at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational in Fairfax, Calif.
