Fink Equals Best Career Round To Lead Beavs - Oregon State University Athletics

SONOMA, Calif. – David Fink fired a 5-under 67 in the second round of the Alister MacKenzie Invitational on Monday to equal his best career score and lead the Oregon State men’s golf team to a tie for sixth place in the 16-team field through 36 holes.

Fink carded a 3-under 69 in the morning round on Monday and bettered that in the afternoon with a 5-under 67 at the par-72, 7,103-yard Sonoma Golf Club to put him in a tie for fourth on the individual leaderboard. It’s the fourth time in his collegiate career he’s shot a 5-under 67 after doing it two years ago as a sophomore and twice last season in his outstanding junior campaign.

As a team, the Beavers concluded the opening 36-hole day with a 6-under 287-283--570 to tie them with UC Davis and Colorado for sixth. Host California, which has dominated this event for several years, is way ahead of the field with a 35-under 541, while Oregon and Arizona State are tied for second (14-under 562), BYU is fourth (12-under 564) and Minnesota is fifth (7-under 569).

Oregon State knocked four strokes off its afternoon round compared to the morning, as four Beaver golfers all posted better scores led by Fink’s 5-under 67 and a 1-under 71 by junior Scott Kim. Freshman Kevin Murphy added an even-par 72 and freshman Kevin Chen posted a 1-over 73 to make up the Beavers’ second round scoring.

Fink, a senior from Kailua, Hawaii, had five birdies and two bogeys in the morning and added another six birds with just one bogey in the afternoon. He is tied for fourth individually with an 8-under 136 behind a trio of Golden Bear golfers -- Joel Stalter (11-under 133), Brandon Hagy (10-under 134) and Pace Johnson (10-under 134).

Murphy, a true freshman from Rogue River, Ore., has lived up to his hype the entire fall season, and he did it again on Monday by posting a 1-under 71-72--143 to put him in a tie for 23^rd place. Kim is just two strokes back with a 1-over 74-71--145.

Junior transfer Alex Franklin was unable to hit red figures in either round but still shot a respectable 3-over 73-74--147 for a tie for 44^th, and Chen used his solid afternoon round to move into a tie for 62^nd with a 5-over 76-73--149.

The final round of the two-day, 54-hole tournaments begins at 8 a.m. on Tuesday with tee times off the first and 10^th holes.
