Beavers will take one boat down to yearly event to help raise money for cancer research
PORTLAND, Ore. - A select few Oregon State women's rowers will take to the Willamette this weekend as they pull their oars for a greater cause. One boat comprised of Lin Hill, Amy McKee, Beth Lewis, Nicole Hook, Gillian Cooper, Anna Taylor, Alissa Kummer as well as Karly and Kayla Laney will arrive in Portland and compete in the 19th annual `Row for the Cure' race.
The event will take place on Sunday, Sept. 30 and will be hosted by the Station L Rowing Club at the Portland Boathouse. Two-time Olympic medalist and three-time world champion Anna Mickelson Cummins will team up with survivors and other prominent participants to help raise money for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
"As a team that has been touched personally by cancer, this race means a lot to us," said head coach Emily Ford. "We are honored to represent Oregon State in a show of support for the breast cancer cause and we plan to dedicate this race to those we have lost, with a sense of gratitude for our own fortunate lives. I think it's going to be a very special experience for these young women."
Row for the Cure is a national organization that was established in 1994. Since its inception it founder Kathy Frederick has helped create a total of 27 regattas across 13 different states stretching from the Atlantic to the Pacific as well as two countries.
