Beavers Win Team Title, Jung Finishes Second at Colorado Tourney

ERIE, Colo. - Jet lag from a season-opening trip to Japan had no effect on the Oregon State men's golf team as the Beavers won the Mark Simpson Invitational and redshirt freshman Brian Jung finished second individually in his collegiate debut on Tuesday.
Oregon State held off a late charge from host Colorado to finish the two-day, 14-team, 54-hole event with a 21-under 284-277-282--843 at the par-72, 7,741-yard Colorado National Golf Club for the Beavers' third team title in the past two years. The 21-under three-round team score equals the fifth-best in school history.
It was Oregon State's second tournament of the 2012 fall season after opening the year with a second-place finish among American schools at the Topy Cup in Tanagura, Japan earlier this month.
"I'm really excited for the guys," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "They worked hard during the week between Japan and now, and they were rewarded with good play. Our schedule from here on out the rest of the fall will get progressively tougher. We need to keep getting better each week. But I think this could be the beginning of something very special for this group."

Jung didn't make the trip to Japan and didn't compete in a tournament during his freshman season, but the pressure of college golf didn't bother him a lick as he fired three subpar rounds, including a pair of 5-under 67's, to finish in second place with an 11-under 67-71-67--205, just three strokes behind senior Kirby Pettitt of Colorado State.
"Brian was awesome this week," Reehoorn said. "To shoot 6-under yesterday was impressive, but to lead us again today with another 67, birdie the last hole and guarantee the win for us was outstanding. This could be the beginning of a very good four years for him."
Jung's 11-under showing equals the fourth-best in Oregon State history and included 14 birdies, with a ridiculous seven on Tuesday, and only three bogeys over the 54 holes. The 5-under 67 rounds he shot equal the fifth-lowest in school history.

Senior Nick Chianello and junior David Fink each finished in a tie for 10th place with a 4-under 212. It was the highest finish for Chianello as a Beaver, bettering his 11th place showing at the Pac-12 Championship, after transferring from the University of Portland where his best finish was a tie for fifth. It was the second time Fink has notched a top-10 finish after posting a tie for 10th at the Bandon Dunes Championship during his freshman year.
Senior Nick Sherwood bounced back from a tough opening round to finish in a tie for 27th with an even-par 76-68-72--216, while senior Matt Rawitzer wrapped up the tourney with a 6-over 78-69-75--222 for a tie for 52nd place.
The Beavers won the Pacific Invitational last fall and the Fresno State Lexus Classic last spring and have already amassed three team titles in head coach Jon Reehoorn's third year at Oregon State.
