ERIE, Colo. - The Oregon State men's golf team fired an 11-under 277 in the afternoon round on Monday, equaling the fifth-lowest round in school history, to take the clubhouse lead through 36 holes of the Mark Simpson Invitational heading into Tuesday's final round.
All five Oregon State players carded subpar rounds during the second 18 holes at the par-72, 7,771-yard Colorado National Golf Club after shooting a 4-under 284 in the morning to finish the day with a 15-under 561, a stroke ahead of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), seven strokes ahead of Colorado State and nine up on host Colorado and Kansas.
The final round of the two-day, 54-hole tournament begins at 7 a.m. (8 a.m. MDT) on Tuesday and can be followed live at golfstat.com.
"There is never anything wrong with being in the lead, but we needed a fourth score in the first round," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "The afternoon was a total team effort and we are going to need that again tomorrow. The guys are excited for tomorrow. We need to focus on what we can control and try to shoot another low round."

It's the second time in the last three tournaments the Beavers have shot an 11-under round after posting a 269 at the NCAA Regional last spring at the par-70 Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, Calif. The lowest round in Oregon State history is a 15-under 345 at the 2000 Pac-10 Championship in a 6-count-5 format and the best in a regular tourney is a 14-under 274 at both the Northwest College Classic in 2004 and Giustina Memorial Classic in 2007.
Redshirt freshman Brian Jung made his collegiate debut with an impressive bogey-free 5-under 67 that included birdies on five consecutive holes before shooting a 1-under 71 in the afternoon to put himself in a tie for second place with a 6-under 138.
"The play by Brian today was impressive," Reehoorn said. "(Assistant coach) Tim (Sundseth) and I were excited to have him in the lineup and see what he could do. To play 36 holes with just one bogey and be tied for second place surpasses any expectations we had."
Senior Nick Chianello also shot in red figures both rounds, carding a 3-under 69 in the morning with four birdies and one bogey and a 1-under 71 after the lunch break with four more birdies and three bogeys. He is tied for ninth place with a chance to post his first career top-10 finish as a Beaver.
Junior David Fink was his usual steady self with an even-par 72 in the morning and a 3-under 69 in the afternoon with four birdies and just one bogey to put himself in a tie for 15th place. He had six birdies and three bogeys on the day and looks to be fully healthy after missing most of last spring with a wrist injury.
The biggest reason, however, for the Beavers hot round in the afternoon was the turnaround by seniors Nick Sherwood and Matt Rawitzer.
Sherwood shot a 4-over 76 in the morning with four bogeys and a double before answering with five birdies and only one bogey in the afternoon for a team-best 4-under 68. Rawitzer struggled in the morning with seven bogeys for a 6-over 78 and was 1-over through 10 holes in the afternoon before reeling off four birdies to finish with a 3-under 69.
Oregon State won two team titles last season with victories at the Pacific Invitational in the fall and the Fresno State Lexus Classic in the spring. The last Beaver golfer to win a tournament outright was Diego Velasquez in October 2009, although Alex Moore shared medalist honors at the 2011 Pac-10 Championship before losing on the seventh hole of a sudden-death playoff.
