Beavers Finish Sixth At Topy Cup, Second Among U.S. Schools

TANAGURA, Japan - The Oregon State men's golf team opened its fall season with a sixth place finish at the Topy Cup in Tanagura, Japan on Thursday, but finished second among the four American teams that participated in the United States-Japan Intercollegiate Golf Championship.
The Beavers finished the three-day, 54-hole competition with a 14-over 291-276-287--854 at the par-70, 6,964-yard Tanagura Country Club. Japanese teams held down the first four spots followed by Baylor, which finished fifth overall with a 9-over 849. The other American universities that competed, San Diego and Pacific, finished eighth and ninth, respectively, in the 10-team field.
Senior Nick Sherwood and junior David Fink paced Oregon State by both finishing with a 1-over 211 for a tie for 17th place. Senior Nick Chianello finished in a tie for 29th with a 5-over 215, while sophomore Scott Kim placed 39th with a 9-over 219 and senior Matt Rawitzer ended up 55th with an 18-over 228.
Oregon State will be credited with a second place finish in regards to postseason consideration with its results against only the American schools counting.
The Beavers return to action on Monday, Sept. 24 and Tuesday, Sept. 25 at the Mark Simpson Invitational in Erie, Colo.
