French Earns Pac-12 All-Academic Honors For Third Straight Year

June 7, 2012
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Senior Whitney French was named to the Pac-12 All-Academic Second Team for the third consecutive year to join an elite list of Oregon State women's golfers to receive the honor three teams, while junior Rachael Fischer and sophomore Lauren Sewell both received honorable mention recognition, Commissioner Larry Scott announced on Thursday.
French joins former Beavers Margo Evashevski (1992-94), Carina Olsson (1998-01), Alex Lucio (2003-05) and Jessi Gebhardt (2006-08) as three-time recipients of conference all-academic honors. It's the 13th consecutive year an Oregon State women's golfer has been selected to the academic team under the leadership of head coach Risë Alexander.
This is the first career academic honors for Fischer and Sewell.
In order to be eligible for the Pac-12 All-Academic teams, a student-athlete must have a grade point average of 3.0 or better and must be a starter or significant contributor.
French concluded a very successful four-year career with Oregon State this spring as she finished third all-time in career scoring average (76.95) and second in rounds played (129). Her scoring average of 76.29 this season led the Beavers and the 1-under 215 she shot at the Rose City Collegiate in the fall of 2010, when she tied for medalist honors, is the second-lowest three-round score in school history.
Fischer, who transferred to Oregon State from the University of Portland last year, played in nine of the 12 tournaments for the Beavers this season. She had a scoring average of 80.54 and shot a career-best tying 2-over 74 at the Bruin Wave Invitational when she recorded her first career top-20 finish with a tie for 17th place.
Sewell played in every tournament for the second straight year and finished her sophomore campaign with a scoring average of 77.23. She shot a 1-under 70 in the second round of the Stanford Intercollegiate and posted her second career top-10 finish with a tie for seventh place at the Peg Barnard Invitational. Her career scoring average of 77.35 through her first two years ranks fifth on Oregon State's career list.
