2012 U.S. Open Sectional Qualifier--Creswell Leader Board
CRESWELL, Ore. - There will be one more Civil War battle in the 2011-12 season when Oregon State men's golfer Nick Sherwood faces Daniel Miernicki of Oregon in a sudden-death playoff beginning at 8 a.m. on Tuesday with a trip to the 112th U.S. Open Championship on the line.
Sherwood, who just completed his junior season with the Beavers, shot a 3-under 70-69--139 in Monday's U.S. Open sectional qualifier at the Emerald Valley Golf Club in Creswell, Ore., to tie Miernicki for second place.
The top two finishers in the 37-player field advance to the 2012 U.S. Open that will be played June 14-17 at The Olympic Club in San Francisco, Calif. Oregon golf coach Casey Martin finished first with a 4-under 69-69--138 to earn one of the two coveted spots.
Play was suspended on Monday due to darkness before the playoff could begin after a thunderstorm forced a long break in the middle of the 36 holes of competition.
Sherwood had three birdies and two bogeys in the morning round for a 1-under 70 and added four birdies and two bogeys in the afternoon round for a 2-under 69 to be just one of four golfers to finish in red numbers and tie Miernicki who finished with a 3-under 71-68--139.
Oregon State golf coach Jon Reehoorn was obviously excited for Sherwood and sent this tweet out immediately after play was suspended on Monday: "Playoff @8AM tomorrow for 1 spot in @usopengolf @jtmoto9 on the bag for @nsherwood14 and @THEMattRawitzer driving down extra clothing. #one".
@jtmoto9 is Oregon State senior golfer Jonnie Motomochi, who served as Sherwood's caddy on Monday, and @THEMattRawitzer is junior Matt Rawitzer, who transferred to Oregon State last spring and was a solid contributor to the Beavers' lineup all season.
The U.S. Open is the national championship of men's golf in the United States, "open" to both professionals and amateurs. The U.S. Open is the second of golf's four major championships on the annual calendar, following the Masters in April and played before the British Open in July and PGA Championship in August.
The U.S. Open has been played every year since its inception in 1895, except for the war years of 1917-18 and 1942-45. From its humble beginnings (only 11 players in 1895), the tournament has become one of professional golf's four major championships, with more than 8,000 players entering qualifying events in 2011.
Sherwood advanced to Monday's U.S. Open sectional qualifier for the third consecutive year after winning medalist honors at a U.S. Open local qualifier in Vancouver, Wash., on May 7 after firing a 6-under 66.
