Chianello Cruises To Crown At 103rd Oregon Amateur Championship

TUALATIN, Ore. - Oregon State's Nick Chianello capped a spectacular week of golf with a 4 and 3 match play win over Tyler Falk at the Tualatin Country Club on Saturday to win the men's title at the 103rd Oregon Amateur Championship.
In Saturday's 36-hole final at the par-72, 6,700-yard layout, Chianello took a 2 up lead after the first two holes before Falk battled to square the match through six holes. Chianello had 4 up leads on two occasions before settling for a 2 up advantage through the first 18 holes.
After a short break, Chianello increased his lead to 5 up through 27 holes and had Falk dormie with six holes to play. Falk won the next two holes, but both golfers pared the par-3, 144-yard 15th hole, the 33rd hole of the match, to give Chianello a 4 and 3 win and the 2012 Oregon Amateur Championship.
Most of the attention of late has been on Nick Sherwood, another Oregon State golfer, who played in the 112th U.S. Open Championship last week after advancing through local and sectional qualifiers.
But this week was all about a different Nick as Chianello took center stage by finishing in a tie for fifth after the two-day, 36-hole stroke play competition on Monday and Tuesday before reeling off five match play wins throughout the week, including one over No. 1 seed and defending champion Jack Dukeminier, heading into Saturday's final against Falk.
The tandem of Sherwood and Chianello will return to Oregon State next season as seniors and give the Beavers a formidable lineup that also includes fellow senior Matt Rawitzer, junior David Fink, sophomore Scott Kim, redshirt freshman Brian Jung and plenty of talented newcomers.
