Chianello Advances To Finals Of 103rd Oregon Amateur Championship

TUALATIN, Ore. - Oregon State men's golfer Nick Chianello worked his way through 36 holes of stroke play competition and five match play rounds to advance to the finals of the 103rd Oregon Amateur where he will face Tyler Falk in a 36-hole championship at the Tualatin Country Club on Saturday.
After shooting a 3-over 75-72--147 during 36 holes of stroke play on Monday and Tuesday, Chianello was the No. 9 seed when the 115-player field was cut to the low 64 players in an NCAA Basketball Tournament-style match play bracket.
The senior-to-be defeated Trey Pflug of Portland 2 and 1 in the Round of 64 on Wednesday, before dispatching of Denny Taylor of Gladstone 3 and 1 in the Round of 32 and Daniel Cheremnov of Silverton 6 and 5 in the Round of 16 on Thursday.
On Friday, Chianello knocked off No. 1 seed and defending champion Jack Dukeminier, a former University of Oregon golfer, 4 and 2 in the quarterfinals and Jesse Heinly, who just finished his sophomore season at Concordia, 3 and 2 in the semifinals to advance to Saturday's 36-hole final.
Falk, the No. 19 seed from Springfield, just finished his sophomore season at Northwest Christian University in Eugene. He advanced to the championship round with wins of 5 and 3 over Brent McKee of Eugene, 2 up over Eric Fiskum of Salem, 3 and 2 over Pat O'Donnell of Happy Valley, 2 and 1 over Matt Keyser of Lake Oswego, and 8 and 6 over No. 18 seed Steven DaSilva of Beaverton in the semifinals.
The finals begin at 8:15 a.m. on Saturday at the par-72, 6,700-yard Tualatin Country Club and live scoring is available at oregonamateur.org.
Brian Jung, who redshirted his freshman year at Oregon State this past season, advanced to match play competition after finishing stroke play tied for fifth with a 1-over 75-70--145. He was the No. 6 seed and defeated Brandon Lorain of Portland 5 and 4 in the Round of 64 before falling 3 and 2 to Keyser in the Round of 32.
