CORVALLIS, Ore. - Seven televised matches on the Pac-12 Networks, a trip to South Bend, Ind., to play Notre Dame and Indiana and the annual Hensor/Zaher Nike Classic highlight the 2012 Oregon State men's soccer schedule as announced by head coach Steve Simmons on Tuesday.
The Beavers will open their regular season on Friday, Aug. 24 against Sacramento State at Paul Lorenz Field at Patrick Wayne Stadium and play their first televised match of the season against UC Irvine on Sunday, Sept. 23 in the Oregon State Hensor/Zaher Nike Classic.
Other games slated to be televised on the inaugural Pac-12 Networks are conference tilts, including the final three of the regular season that will all be played at home. The televised matches include:
Oregon State Televised Games On Pac-12 Networks
Sept. 23 - UC Irvine (noon)
Sept. 30 - at Washington (4 p.m.)
Oct. 5 - at UCLA (3 p.m.)
Oct. 18 - at Stanford (5 p.m.)
Oct. 26 - UCLA (1 p.m.)
Oct. 28 - San Diego State (2 p.m.)
Nov. 9 - Washington (2 p.m.)
"Without a doubt, our televised matches on the new Pac-12 Networks will continue to help elevate our men's soccer program as well as the entire OSU Athletics Department," Simmons said. "This type of exposure will put us among the best in the nation. I'm delighted on how this season's schedule shaped up. The non-conference games will certainly prepare us for another challenging Pac-12 campaign."
After the season opener, the Beavers will travel to Spokane, Wash., to play UC Santa Barbara on Friday, Aug. 31 and Manhattan College on Sunday, Sept. 2. The trip to South Bend, Ind., features just the second meeting between Oregon State and Notre Dame (the Irish won 2-1 in 2004) and the third with Indiana. The Hoosiers won the first match, 3-1, in 2004 and the teams battled to a 2-2 tie in 2005.
Oregon State will host UW-Green Bay on Friday, Sept. 21 and UC Irvine on Sunday, Sept. 23 in the Hensor/Zaher Nike Classic, an annual tournament since 2004 that honors student-athletes Stephen Hensor and Joe Zaher who tragically died in 2002.
Gonzaga comes to Corvallis on Saturday, Sept. 15 in a rivalry that has been played in all but two years (1992, 2001) since the start of Oregon State's men's soccer program in 1988. The Beavers hold a 16-7-4 advantage in the series with a 1-0 win last season that snapped a streak of four matches without a victory.
Oregon State will also play a pair of exhibition games with the Portland Timbers visiting Paul Lorenz Field on Saturday, Aug. 11 and Simon Fraser coming to Corvallis a week later.
