SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - As the sun set in the Bay Area on Friday and the large crowds headed home from the 112th U.S. Open Championship, Oregon State golfer Nick Sherwood never stopped fighting. He finished the second round with a birdie and par, and although he missed the cut, the junior from Albany had an experience that he will never forget.
"I'll remember this for the rest of my life," Sherwood said. "I have no regrets. I gave it everything I had until the very last shot. I'm disappointed I didn't play better, but I'm not disappointed in my effort. I left it all out there. One of the things I always believe is that you put it all out there the best you can. Some days you get the breaks and some days you don't. It was an unbelievable experience."
He concluded his first career major championship with an 18-over 78-80--158 at the par-70 Lake Course at The Olympic Club for a tie for 148th place. The final cut number was 8-over and several PGA Professionals missed it, including 2011 U.S. Open champion Rory McIlroy, 2012 Masters champion Bubba Watson and the top-ranked player in the world in Luke Donald.
But what's far more important than Sherwood's final score and standing on the leaderboard is the experience of a major championship he now has under his belt. He was one of only eight amateurs in the 156-person field and had the opportunity to play practice rounds with Vijay Singh and Rickie Fowler.
"The best part of the week is that I learned a lot about the quality of player I want to be," Sherwood said. "It started as a whirlwind and I didn't know what to think. I was wide-eyed about it all. But it was a lot of fun learning from Vijay and Rickie. Everybody has to start somewhere and I'm going to work hard to continue to get better so I can get there again."
Sherwood started on the ninth hole in the final group to tee off on Friday and was 3-over through his first seven holes before taking bogeys on four consecutive holes. He pared the second and fourth holes for the second straight day and had his only double bogey in Friday's round on the par-4 fifth.
He birdied the par-4 seventh hole, his first birdie since opening the tournament with a tweet on the 520-yard, par-4 first hole, and finished with a par on his 36th hole of the U.S. Open, the 192-yard, par-3 eighth, after every other threesome was off the course.
For the tournament, Sherwood hit 10 of 28 fairways (35.71%), 16 of 36 greens in regulation (44.44%), had 67 putts for an average of 1.86 per hole and an average driving distance of 272 yards.
Sherwood will return to Oregon State for his senior year in 2012-13 and team up with talented players like Nick Chianello, Matt Rawitzer, David Fink and Scott Kim to give the Beavers a potent lineup in head coach Jon Reehoorn's third season at the helm.
"To qualify for the U.S. Open as an amateur is quite an accomplishment," Reehoorn said. "Nick is disappointed with his play the last two days, but the experience he has gained from competing in the U.S. Open is something that cannot be taught. I'm proud of him for battling all the way to the end and can't wait for him to be home and begin sharing his experience with his teammates."
Sherwood earned his way into the U.S. Open field by winning medalist honors at a local qualifier with a 6-under 66 and defeating an All-Pac-12 First Team golfer, Daniel Miernicki of Oregon, in a sudden-death playoff at a sectional qualifier. It was the third time Sherwood advanced to sectionals but the first time he qualified for one of the four biggest golf tournaments in the world.
