Sherwood Wins U.S. Open Local Qualifier, Advances To Sectionals Again

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State men's golfer Nick Sherwood was the qualifying medalist at a U.S. Open local qualifier in Vancouver, Wash., on Monday after firing a 6-under 66 to win by three strokes and advance to sectionals for the third consecutive year.
There were 100 golfers competing at Royal Oaks Country Club, which is one of 109 courses hosting an 18-hole U.S. Open local qualifier, and the top six finishers at each advance to the sectional round. The top finishers in the sectionals earn a place in the U.S. Open that will be played June 14-17 at The Olympic Club in San Francisco, Calif.
The junior from Albany, Ore., started on the 10th hole at the Royal Oaks Country Club and went out with a 2-under 34 with birdies on the par-4 10th, par-5 15th and par-3 16th holes. He started his back nine with birdies on the par-4 first and par-5 second holes, had pars on the next two holes, added birdies on the par-3 fifth and par-5 sixth holes and finished the round with three pars to come in with a 4-under 32.
Sherwood had three of his Oregon State teammates at Royal Oaks with him on Monday as senior Jonnie Motomochi served as his caddy and juniors Matt Rawitzer and Nick Chianello finished in a tie for seventh (1-under 71) and tie for 14th (even-par 72), respectively.
