Last Game
Taylor Starr scattered seven hits in 6 1/3 innings and Michael Conforto and Kavin Keyes each drove in two to send the 23rd-ranked Oregon State baseball team to a 5-0 win over No. 5 Oregon Sunday. The win sent the Beavers to a series sweep of the Ducks. Starr improved to 5-2 after picking up the win.
Pac-12 Awards
Oregon State outfielder Michael Conforto was named the Pac-12 Conference’s Freshman of the Year on Wednesday after leading the league with 71 RBI and tying for the lead with 13 home runs. He and junior Tyler Smith were named to the league’s first team while freshman Jace Fry, Jake Rodriguez, Dan Child and Ryan Dunn were named honorable mention.
How Sweep It Is
Oregon State’s sweep of Oregon on Sunday gave the Beavers two during Pac-12 play - the first came in the Pac-12 opener at California. OSU won seven of its 10 series in league play, including four of five at Goss Stadium. The Beavers went 9-5 against teams from the Pac-12 hosting during NCAA Regional play.
On The Road
Oregon State will be playing its 33rd game away from Goss Stadium this season when taking on Belmont. The Beavers are 20-12 away from Corvallis. OSU is 5-1 in neutral-site games, with its only loss to St. Mary’s in Surprise, Ariz.
Defensive Gems
Oregon State has not committed an error in its last seven games leading up to the regional and has a season-best .977 percentage. The Beavers tallied a .982 percentage in Pac-12 play. OSU’s fielding percentage in 14 May games was .986, with just eight errors in 580 chances.
Looking For 40
Oregon State enters the postseason with 38 victories for the second consecutive season after going 38-17 in the 2011 regular season. Two wins would give OSU 40 for the fifth time.
Singles
• OSU and host LSU have combined for three of the last six national titles.
• The Beavers’ matchup with Belmont is their first meeting ever against a club from the Atlantic Sun Conference.
• OSU is 8-4 in Friday games this season.
