John Cheney first joined the Oregon State University staff in August 1998 as a graduate assistant athletic trainer, a position he held until March 2001. After receiving his master's degree from Oregon State, Cheney became an assistant on the event management staff.
He was named Event Manager on July 1, 2001 and held that title until February 1, 2002 when he was named interim Director of Operations. He became the Director of Operations in July of 2003 and was promoted to Assistant Athletic Director for Facilities and Operations in July of 2005. In November of 2010, Cheney was again promoted to his current position as Associate Athletic Director - Facilities and Operations.
In his current capacity, Cheney supervises the event management operations for all sports with specific game management duties for football and gymnastics. His office manages the game management requirements, game-day parking, and coordination of the event staff for all home Beaver events. He oversees all NCAA, Pac-12 Conference and other postseason competitions hosted by OSU. Past events include multiple NCAA Regional and Super Regional Baseball Championships, NCAA Regional and Super Regional Softball Championships, NCAA West Regional Gymnastics Championships, and the 2006 NCAA Gymnastics National Championships.
On the facilities side, Cheney's responsibilities include coordinating all capital projects and building renovations, supervision of the athletic maintenance department staff, and attending to the facility needs of all the athletic venues. His office is also responsible for the scheduling and rental of all athletic venues.
Cheney held an instrumental role in the programming, design and construction of the Reser Stadium expansions completed in September 2005 and 2007, and has been involved in over $175 million in capital improvements during his tenure. He is currently involved in the programming, planning, and construction phases for several other projects including the Student Success Center, the Whyte Track and Field Center, and the basketball practice facility project.
Prior to joining the Oregon State staff, Cheney was a student athletic trainer at Creighton University (1993-97) and a post-graduate intern athletic trainer in 1998. He earned a bachelor degree from Creighton in 1997.
He is married to the former Anne Brooksby. Anne was a three-year letter winner on the Oregon State women's golf team (1997-01). They have two daughters, Cailey, Allie, and a son Gavin and are expecting their fourth child in August 2012.
