Last Game
Kavin Keyes and John Tommasini both had two hits but the Oregon State baseball team lost its series finale at USC, 6-2, Sunday at Dedeaux Field. The Trojans won the last two games to claim the series. Keyes and Tommasini both reached via a pair of singles to lead Oregon State offensively. The Beavers tallied nine hits while USC managed 14 – just one going for extra bases, a double in the seventh. Dan Child started and allowed 10 hits – all singles – in three innings of work before being relieved by Taylor Starr in the fourth.
TV Saturday
Saturday’s game will be broadcast live on KEZI 9.2 (channel 309 digital) in the Corvallis/Eugene region and ROOT Sports in the rest of the Northwest. It can also be seen nationally on FCS channel 415 (Comcast).
The “Stretch Run”
May would have to be considered the stretch run in collegiate baseball. The Beavers are looking for their third winning May in the last four seasons. OSU is 107-97 (.524) in May in Pat Casey’s previous 17 seasons.
April Is Over, Meanwhile
The Beavers finished with a 12-6 record in April, their seventh winning April in the last nine years. As a team, the Beavers batted .266 and posted a fielding percentage of .982. OSU’s staff finished with an ERA of 3.00 in 156 innings. OSU’s bullpen went 4-0 with a 3.31 ERA.
Stanford Back-And-Forth
Oregon State and Stanford have battled back-and-forth in recent years. Neither team has won consecutive series since the Beavers in 2006 and 2007. In fact. both teams have won the last two series on the road: OSU in 2009 and 2011 and Stanford in 2008 and 2010.
Scoring First
The Beavers have scored first in their last six games, going 4-2 over that stretch. Oregon State is 20-6 overall when scoring first in 2012, including an 8-3 mark when that happens at Goss Stadium.
Singles
• OSU needs two wins for 30 this season, which would be the Beavers’ fourth season in a row at that plateau.
• Michael Conforto has hit safely in 34 of his 40 games played. OSU is 20-4 (.833) when he drives in at least one run.
• The Beavers are 21-8 (.724) when Tyler Smith posts at least one hit.
• OSU is 5-6 against top 25 teams in 2012.
