Dan Child To Play For Team USA

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State right-handed pitcher Dan Child became the second Beaver to accept an invitation to play for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team on Tuesday.
Child will join Michael Conforto, who accepted his invitation prior to OSU’s game against Portland last week.
Child is 6-3 this season and sports a 2.80 earned run average in 99 2/3 innings. He has struck out 77 and has 10 quality starts this season, which is one shy of the team’s 2011 leader, Sam Gaviglio.
Conforto’s and Child’s appearances will mark just the second time Oregon State will send two players in the same year. Jonah Nickerson and Kevin Gunderson played for Team USA in 2005.
Darwin Barney (2006), Kevin Rhoderick (2008) and Matt Boyd (2011) are Oregon State’s other players with USA Baseball Collegiate National Team ties.
Oregon State and North Carolina State are the only two programs to have two players named to the 2012 club thus far.
Team USA is scheduled to play nine games at its National Training Complex and the Durham Bulls Athletic Park from June 25 through July 3 before embarking on a five-game series that starts July 5 at Latin American Stadium in Havana. From there, the club will close out its slate of games at the Honkbal-Haarlem Baseball Week in Haarlem, The Netherlands. The tournament starts July 14 and ends July 22; Team USA will play Japan, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Chinese Taipei and The Netherlands, amongst other countries.
Oregon State returns home for its final three games of the season next weekend when hosting Oregon in the Civil War presented by the Northwest Ford Dealers and PacificSource Health Plans. The clubs play at 5:35 p.m. PT Friday to open the series.
