May 21, 2012
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Oregon State junior Danny Hayes has been named the Pac-12 Conference's Player of the Week as announced by commissioner Larry Scott on Monday.
Hayes was 8-for-14 (.571) in the Beavers' four games, in which Oregon State defeated Portland and Washington State twice. He hit three home runs - including two in the first game of the series in Pullman - and totaled 10 RBI with a double and four walks. He extended his hit streak to a season-high eight games with a ninth-inning double in Sunday's series finale.
The Rancho Murieta, Calif., native drove in two in a 12-4 win over Portland, then homered in the first and second innings Friday to drive in five. He homered again Saturday and drove in three, giving him eight RBI against the Cougars.
He is hitting a robust .615 (16-for-26) with 10 runs, 11 RBI, three doubles and three home runs during the streak.
It is the first weekly honor of Hayes' career and the first Pac-12 Player of the Week award for the Beavers this season. He joins Jace Fry (Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week April 23) as weekly Pac-12 honorees.
It is the 60th all-time Player of the Week honor for the Beavers.
Oregon State returns home for its final three games of the season next weekend when hosting Oregon in the Civil War presented by the Northwest Ford Dealers and PacificSource Health Plans. The clubs play at 5:35 p.m. PT Friday to open the series.
