Four Beavers on Preseason Teams From Phil Steele

May 17, 2012
CORVALLIS, Ore. -
Four Oregon State football players were recognized when Phil Steele sent his Phil Steele’s 2012 College Football Preview to press. Among those selected was senior cornerback Jordan Poyer, who is on Steele’s preseason All-America squad.
Poyer, who registered 57 tackles and led the Pac-12 with 16 passes defended in 2011, was named to the Pac-12 first team at cornerback and to the conference’s second team squad as a punt returner. In addition, Poyer is on Steele’s preseason All-America Fourth Team.
Senior receiver Markus Wheaton and sophomore defensive end Scott Crichton each garnered second team all-conference selections. Wheaton, who has been the Beavers’ leading receiver each of the last two seasons and just missed his first 1,000-yard receiving season in 2011, is OSU’s most established returning playmaker while Crichton set a school-record with six forced fumbles during his initial season with the Beavers. Crichton added 74 tackles, including 14.5 behind the line of scrimmage and led the team with six sacks.
Junior outside linebacker Michael Doctor earned fourth team preseason All-Pac-12. A starter in 11 games last season, Doctor was second on the team with 78 tackles including four tackles-for-loss, 2.5 sacks, two interceptions and a fumble recovery.
The Beavers open fall camp Aug. 6 in preparation for a seven-game home schedule that starts Sept. 1 at home against Nicholls State followed by a visit from defending Big Ten champion Wisconsin.
