STANFORD, Calif. - The Oregon State men's golf team had a tough finish to its opening round of the 2012 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Stanford Regional on Thursday but have two more rounds to finish strong and advance to nationals.
The Beavers finished the opening round with a 7-over 287 at the par-70, 6,727-yard Stanford Golf Course to put them in a tie for 10th place with Southeastern Louisiana and San Jose State. Three Bay Area schools -- San Francisco (-7), California (-4) and Stanford (-3) -- took advantage of a familiar course to hold down the top spots, while UAB, UCF and Wichita State are all tied for fourth at 2-under par.
"For 16 holes we were right in the mix of things," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "That's what you need to do on day one is to make sure you are still in the mix. Now we've got our work cut out for us the next two days."
The Beavers still have 36 holes over the next two days to finish in the top five of the 13-team field and advance to the NCAA Championships May 29-June 3 at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif. They've shot several low rounds during the season and have the ability to do so again.
T10 | Oregon State | 287 | 287 |
T27 | Nick Sherwood (4) | 70 | 70 |
T40 | Nick Chianello (1) | 71 | 71 |
T54 | Jonnie Motomochi (2) | 73 | 73 |
T54 | David Fink (3) | 73 | 73 |
T54 | Matt Rawitzer (5) | 73 | 73 |
"Afterward I told the guys that we've dug ourselves a little hole and we've got to come out ready to play from the beginning tomorrow," Reehoorn said. "This thing isn't over; we have 36 holes to go. We've got to keep doing what we are doing but be better at avoiding the big number when we find trouble."
Junior Nick Sherwood led the Beavers with an even-par 70 and junior Nick Chianello finished with a 1-over 71 despite a triple-bogey on his final hole, while senior Jonnie Motomochi, junior Matt Rawitzer and sophomore David Fink all shot a 3-over 73.
Sherwood battled throughout his round to get into red numbers twice before finishing the day with a bogey on the 18th hole for an even-par start to the tournament. He dominated the par-3's, birdying four of the five on the course, and added a birdie on the par-4 11th hole to go along with five bogeys.
"Nick Sherwood played the par-3's unbelievable today with four two's on the card," Reehoorn said. "He left some shots out there on the par-5's, but it was a good start to the event for him."
Chianello started off on fire with three birdies in his first five holes and a birdie on the par-5 seventh hole after a bogey on the sixth to go out with a 3-under 32. He bogeyed the 10th and 12th holes but got back to 2-under after a birdie on the par-5 16th before the unfortunate finish with a triple on the par-4 18th hole.
"Nick was really solid all day and then found the left long grass off the tee (on 18) and unfortunately it ended up in a seven," Reehoorn said. "He will bounce back and be ready to post a couple of good numbers for us the next two rounds."
Motomochi had a similar finish as Chianello with a bogey on the par-5 16th hole and a double on the par-3 17th hole after scrambling back to even with a birdie on the par-4 13th. He opened Thursday's round with a birdie on the par-5 first and shot a 1-over 36 on the front nine before the tough finish.
Fink had three consecutive bogeys on the third, fourth and fifth holes and had another on 14 but held strong to post a birdie on the par-5 16th hole and finish with a 3-over 75. Rawitzer also finished well with a birdie on his last hole after three bogeys, a double and one birdie over the first 17 holes to also shoot a 75.
The individual leaders after the first round -- Zachary Blair of BYU, who is playing as an individual, and Sang Yi of LSU -- each shot a 4-under 66 so it's difficult to go real low on a golf course that only has three par-5's.
The Beavers will start the second round at 8:55 a.m. off the 10th hole on Friday and be paired with Southeastern Louisiana and San Jose State. Rawitzer (8:55 a.m.), Fink (9:06 a.m.), Motomochi (9:17 a.m.), Chianello (9:28 a.m.) and Sherwood (9:39 a.m.) will go out in that order.
