Last Game
Dan Child struck out 11 and Nate Esposito walked with the bases loaded in the 10th inning to send Oregon State to a 5-4 win over Utah Sunday. Esposito, who was a defensive replacement at catcher in the ninth, walked on four straight pitches from Utah reliever Josh Chapman. It scored Ryan Dunn, who had doubled to lead off the inning, and was the Beavers’ third consecutive walk in the inning. Child became the first Beaver to reach double figure strikeouts in a game this season.
Michael Conforto’s Year
Keep an eye on Michael Conforto over the last seven games of the regular season. He needs four RBI to tie Joe Gerber (2000) for the most in a single-season at 67. He and Washington State’s Derek Jones are the only Pac-12 players to rank in the top 10 in batting average (.348), home runs (11) and RBI. Conforto is 10th, first and first, respectively.
Dan Child’s 10 innings
Dan Child became the first OSU pitcher to work into the 10th inning of a start since Scott Nicholson on May 12, 2001 at UCLA. Nicholson allowed 17 hits and six runs in his start. Child was impressive Sunday, scattering nine hits and three earned runs for his 10th quality start of the season. Sam Gaviglio led OSU with 11 in 2011.
Non-Conference Wins
The Beavers are looking for their 20th non-conference win of the season on Tuesday. The Beavers would reach that mark for the fourth consecutive season and in the last eight of nine.
Against Portland
In going 2-0 against Portland this season, the Beavers have out-hit the Pilots 25 to 13 while out-scoring them 13-2. OSU’s staff has a 0.50 earned run average against UP. Ryan Gorton has five hits over the two games to lead the Beavers offensively.
Singles
• OSU head coach Pat Casey is looking for his 611th win with the Beavers Tuesday. That would put him two shy of tying Jack Riley for the most by an OSU coach.
• OSU has won 14 straight over Portland and 20 of 21. The Beavers are on a six-game win streak at home.
• The Beavers are batting .295 in 25 non-conference games. OSU’s staff has an ERA of 3.53 in such games.
• OSU won its first game of the season Sunday when trailing after seven innings. The Beavers are 1-12 when trailing after seven.
