Men's Crew Aims For Best Races Of Season At Pac-12 Championships

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Fresh off of an appearance in the ever-competitive Windermere Cup in Seattle, the 20th-ranked Oregon State men's crew team will take to the waters of Lake Natoma in Gold River, Calif. for the Pac-12 Rowing Championships on Mother's Day, Sunday, May 13.
Since no more than seven boats were entered in any of the races, heats have been eliminated on the men's side this year. The Beavers' varsity eight (11:30 a.m.), junior varsity eight (10:50 a.m.), freshman eight (9:30 a.m.) and varsity four (10:10 a.m.) will all compete in the Grand Finals.

"Since last week in Seattle the goal has been to fine tune and rest up for this weekend," Oregon State head coach Steve Todd said. "At this time of year it is all about making the absolute best race possible happen when it counts."
In the feature V8 race at 11:30 a.m., OSU's Dan Thompson (coxswain), Ross Ellingwood, Daniel Werner, Clayton Ward, Wyatt Worrel, Jorgen Anderson, Bryce Fransen, Ty Louis and Chris Nofziger will be in lane four between UCLA and Stanford. Last weekend, the group finished the 2,000-meter course on Montlake Cut in a time of 6:03.6, just four seconds behind Virginia and the Argentina National Team.
Oregon State's JV8 will also be in lane four at 10:50 a.m. The Beavers' F8 and V4 will race from lane three earlier in the morning.
OSU is one of four Pac-12 teams in the national rankings heading into the conference championships. Washington (No. 1), California (No. 4) and Stanford (No. 8) are all in the USRowing Collegiate Poll from May 9. UCLA, Washington State and Colorado are the other Pac-12 crews rounding out the field.
The Beavers' varsity eight has already seen both Washington and Stanford in head-to-head action this season. Oregon State hosted Stanford in duals on Dexter Lake on April 7, finishing four seconds behind the Cardinal, while UW took home the Windermere Cup last Saturday.
In 2011, Oregon State finished third at the Pac-10 Championships with 48 team points, coming in behind Washington and Cal. The Beavers' V8 (6:02.3) and JV8 (6:10.7) finished fourth, while their V4 (6:57.9) and F8 (6:13.5) both came in third.
