PERSONAL: Born in Eugene, OR…parents are Gerald and Karin Willett…her father is a basketball coach and her mother is a waitress…her father is a former University of Oregon player (1971-75) and former professional player in Spain (1975-77)…she has a younger sister, Jillian, 15…undecided on major…she enters OSU with a 3.94 GPA…enjoys reading, writing, travel and photography…she was on the South Eugene honor roll and received the outstanding senior award and future first citizen award…also recruited by Portland and Montana…selected OSU because, “beautiful area, wonderful people, close to home, quality education and I felt I belonged.”
OREGON STATE (2000-01) Freshman: Awbrey will join the OSU program for the start of practice in October and compete for playing time at power forward…according to Judy Spoelstra, “Awbrey is a blue collar worker and gets the job done at the power forward spot. One of the most impressive aspects of Awbrey’s game is her knowledge. She is a very intelligent athlete because she has been coached well by Jim Denker. Coach Denker stresses defense and a team concept in which Awbrey has excelled.
SOUTH EUGENE HIGH SCHOOL, Eugene, OR: Awbrey led South Eugene to the 4A State championship in 1999, her junior year…was a four-year letter winner in basketball at South Eugene…she earned second team all-league (Midwestern) honors as a sophomore and junior and first team as a senior…played in the Oregon vs. Washington all-star game…was co-captain of the team her senior year…played in many all-star tournaments in the summer of 2000…her best prep game was in the 1999 state championship game when she held Westview’s Kara Braxton to 2 points in the first half as South Eugene took at decisive 17-point lead…Awbrey had 10 points and 8 rebounds at halftime…as a junior, she averaged 9.3 points a game (262 points) and 6.5 rebounds (181 total)…she shot .522 (106-203) from the field and .575 (50-87) from the foul line…she had 90 steals and 35 assists…as a senior in 22 games, Awbrey averaged 12.9 points (284 total) and 7.8 rebounds, while shooting .496 (111-224) from the field and .614 (62-101) from the foul line…she had 30 steals and 30 assists…she was voted the South Eugene Female Athlete of the Year in 1998.
