Last Game
Oregon State had the tying run on base in both the eighth and ninth innings but could not push him across in a 3-2 loss to No. 9 Oregon Tuesday night at PK Park. Oregon State scored two runs in the eighth after finding itself down 3-0 entering the frame. Danny Hayes drove in the inning’s first run on a sacrifice fly, then Ryan Barnes drove in Jake Rodriguez with a sharp single to center. Ryan Dettman, pinch running for Barnes, stole second with two outs, but was left at second when Tyler Smith lined out to left.
Hello Utah
Oregon State is making its first ever trip to Utah as the Beavers and Utes will be meeting for just the eighth ever time. OSU and Utah, the newest member of the Pac-12, last met in 2010, with the Beavers winning, 5-4. The clubs have played just five times since 1993, and the Beavers are 4-1 since then.
Against Utah
Oregon State did host Utah in 2010, but very few Beavers would remember playing in that game. Ten current Oregon State players were on the team’s roster that season, with eight playing in the game, accounting for four at bats and two innings on the mound.
All Day Games
All three games this weekend will be during the day due to Triple-A’s Salt Lake use of Spring Mobile Ballpark at night. That’s just fine for OSU, which is 24-8 in day games in 2012. The Beavers are batting .289 and have an ERA of 3.34 in 293 1/3 innings in day contests.
Staff Hot During Pac-12 Play
The Oregon State pitching staff takes the league’s third-best ERA into Friday’s game at 3.34, just 0.02 behind No. 2 Arizona State. The staff is also fourth with 132 strikes, six behind No. 1 Oregon, which has played three more games. The staff has also allowed a league-low 35 extra-base hits; three clubs have allowed more than 35 doubles.
Singles
• OSU’s loss Tuesday dropped the Beavers to 0-11 this season when scoring two runs or less.
• The Beavers also fell to 6-7 in one-run games. Four of the seven losses have come in Pac-12 play.
• Utah is slated for three right-handed starters this weekend; OSU is 24-13 when an opponent starts a right-hander this season.
• OSU has outscored Utah, 44-24, all-time in the series. That amounts to an average score of 6-3, roughly.
