Last Game
Jace Fry allowed six hits and three runs over 7 2/3 innings, but the Oregon State baseball team could not overcome a two-run fifth inning by USC in a 3-2 loss to the Trojans Saturday afternoon at Dedeaux Field. Fry struck out six and threw 114 pitches in his eighth start of the season but was saddled with the loss in the one-run decision. He dropped to 4-3 this season. The Trojans took the lead for good in the fifth inning after finding themselves down 2-1.
A Loss But A Quality Start
Oregon State may have lost Saturday but Jace Fry threw his fifth quality start in eight appearances this season. He and Ben Wetzler have combined to go 14 1/3 innings over the first two games of the series, allowing 13 hits, five runs (ERA of 3.14), three walks and 13 strikeouts.
Rodriguez Extends The Streak
Jake Rodriguez collected two hits in Saturday’s loss to extend his hit streak to five games. It’s his second five-game hit streak of the season.
More Solid Defense
The Beavers did not commit an error for the fifth time in their last eight games Saturday and have greatly improved their team fielding percentage. OSU has a season-best .973 fielding percentage. The Beavers are at 542 assists, just 143 shy of their entire total from all of last year. The Beavers are on pace for 740 in 2012.
The Steal Category
USC swiped a base against the Beavers Saturday, ending a streak of five consecutive caught stealings by Oregon State catchers. Opponents are just three for their last 15 in stolen-base attempts.
Solid Sundays
Sunday’s game is considered a rubber match as both clubs have won games thus far in the series. The Beavers come into the game with a good mark on Sundays in 2012, going 8-1, including a 2-0 record on the road. The team’s lone Sunday loss came against Arizona at Goss Stadium.
Singles
• The Beavers have scored first in their last five games. They are 4-1 over that stretch.
• Oregon State is 0-8 this season when scoring two runs or less.
• The Beavers are also 5-6 in one-run games. They were 4-7 in 2011.
• OSU is 16-5 when a Beavers’ starter throws a quality start this season.
