Last Game
Ryan Dunn homered and Michael Conforto drove in two to pace the Oregon State baseball team to a series-opening 5-3 win over USC Friday night at Dedeaux Field. Dunn hit the first pitch in the eighth inning over the left field fence to give the Beavers a two-run, 4-2 lead, cushion. The shot came off reliever Nigel Nootbaar and marked OSU’s first hit off the right-hander since he had entered in the fifth inning. The home run was Dunn’s sixth of the season; all have been solo shots.
Well That Doesn’t Happen Often
Overlooked in the Beavers’ offensive day Friday is the fact that OSU did not strike out. That doesn’t happen often as the Beavers last went through a game with no strikeouts against Hartford last season. Before that? In 2007 against Evansville. Immediate game-by-game results do not exist past 1999; OSU has not accomplished the feat against a league school since then, until Friday, of course.
And Hey, No Walks
For the fourth time this season, OSU’s pitchers did not walk a batter. All four of those instances have come over the team’s last 12 games. For comparison sakes, the Beavers also failed to walk a batter in four game in 2011.
Conforto Extends His
Michael Conforto extended his season-long hit streak to 11 games and upped his league-leading RBI total to 54 in Friday’s win. His 11-game hit streak is the team’s second-longest in 2012; Tyler Smith leads with a 14-gamer.
Bad Timing?
There’s surely no time when a home run could be unfortunate but Ryan Dunn must be wondering what he needs to do to get a runner on when he goes deep. He hit his sixth round-tripper Friday, all of which have been solo shots. He has three home runs in his last eight games.
Solid Schultz
Scott Schultz has been strong out of the bullpen as of late, holding opponents scoreless over his last 4 1/3 innings. He’s allowed one earned run over his last 12 2/3 innings, which amounts to a 0.71 earned run average.
Singles
• OSU is now 1,000-895 (.528) all-time in games played away from Corvallis.
• OSU is 19-0 when scoring first this season.
• The Beavers are 25-0 when entering the ninth with the lead.
• Oregon State has won 10 of its last 11 games.
