Pac-12 Men's Golf Championship Live Scoring
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Playing on its home course at Trysting Tree Golf Club, the Oregon State men's golf team held the lead late in the day on Friday but fell to fifth place after 36 holes of the three-day, 72-hole Pac-12 Men's Golf Championship.
The Beavers finished the opening day with a 7-over 362-365--727 at the par-72, 7,030-yard course in a day that began at 8 a.m. and didn't conclude until the final group finished at 7:30 p.m. UCLA is the only team to finish under par after making a strong comeback on the final nine holes to finish with a 1-under 719.
Junior Nick Chianello didn't let the pressure of his first Pac-12 Championship bother him as he led the Beavers with a 1-under 71-72--143, including a birdie on his final hole of the day, to sit in a tie for 10th place on the individual leader board.
| 5 | Oregon State | 362 | 365 | 727 |
| T10 | Nick Chianello (1) | 71 | 72 | 143 |
| T13 | Jonnie Motomochi (3) | 71 | 73 | 144 |
| T15 | Matt Rawitzer (6) | 75 | 70 | 145 |
| T33 | David Fink (4) | 72 | 76 | 148 |
| T37 | Nick Sherwood (5) | 73 | 76 | 149 |
| T42 | Alex Moore (2) | 76 | 74 | 150 |
Senior Jonnie Motomochi also had a solid day with an even-par 71-73--144 for a tie for 13th place, while junior Matt Rawitzer was in the first group of the day and is tied for 15th place with a 1-over 75-70--145 after a spectacular afternoon round that included five birdies.
Oregon State took the team lead midway through the back nine of the afternoon round but had four of its golfers combine to shoot 10 over in the final four holes of the day to fall to fifth place behind UCLA (-1), Oregon (+2), California (+4) and USC (+4).
However, the Beavers know the course well and should have the confidence to bounce back with half of the tournament remaining and better weather expected on the weekend.
Sophomore David Fink is one player who should respond in the final 36 holes of the tournament after finishing the first day with a 4-over 72-76--148, while junior Nick Sherwood has the capability to go much lower than the 5-over 73-76--149 he carded on Friday.
Senior All-American Alex Moore, who lost in a playoff in last year's Pac-10 Men's Golf Championship, had a triple-bogey in each round on Friday that hurt his overall score, but had three birdies in each 18 and should also bounce back in the final two rounds.
The Beavers will be paired with USC and Washington State on Saturday and tee off the first hole with Moore (9 a.m.), Sherwood (9:10 a.m.), Fink (9:20 a.m.), Rawitzer (9:30 a.m.), Motomochi (9:40 a.m.) and Chianello (9:50 a.m.) going out in that order. Admission is free to the public.
