Everyday Champion -- Nick Sherwood

April 26, 2012
Nick Sherwood was born a Beaver. Both of his parents attended Oregon State University and Nick couldn't be prouder than to be part of Beaver athletics as a key member of the men's golf team and as an excellent student in the classroom.
Sherwood has a 2.91 GPA in Business Entrepreneurship, and although his goal is to play on the PGA Tour one day, he also wants to own his own business and use his leadership skills to run a successful company.
But for now, his ultimate goal is to make a putt on the final hole at the Pac-12 Championships with the Oregon Ducks playing in the same group to win the team title for Oregon State and the individual title for himself. Did we mention he was born a Beaver?

The following are questions Sherwood answered before the start of the spring golf season.
When and where did you start playing golf?
"I started playing golf at age 4. I grew up playing at Springhill Country Club in Albany, Ore."
Who is the one person who has helped you the most in your golf career?
"My whole family played a helping roll in my golf career. In particular my dad, Bill Sherwood, has always loved the game and taught me important keys in my mental game and full swing that I still use in competition. My mom, Lynn Sherwood, was the one who always took me and picked me up from the course growing up. She would take me whenever I wanted and never complained about it. She has always been very supportive and always believes in me."
Have you ever gotten a hole-in-one?
"I have one hole-in-one. It was a 217-yard, par-3 in Vegas, Nevada. I was 16-years-old and I used my 2-iron hybrid. This hybrid is still in my bag today."
What's your favorite golf course and why?
"My favorite golf course is Royal Oaks because of its difficulty. I haven't beat the course "so to speak" but I love the challenge every time you tee it up. Those are the best greens I have ever putted on."
Why did you choose to attend Oregon State?
"I chose to attend Oregon State because it was a perfect fit. Both of my parents attended Oregon State and my dad played basketball here for Ralph Miller back in the day. Also, one of my favorite parts about going to Oregon State is the fact I can watch my two younger brothers play basketball and watch them grow and develop. Chad and Nate are the best brothers I could ask for. They are so fun. I consider them more than just brothers but my friends."
What do you like best about your teammates?
"Our golf team has a great team atmosphere. I love the jokes and funny times we have. But, most of all, we want to be great and it's inspiring to have people around you who want to get better."
What do you like best about your coaches?
"Jon Reehorn and Tim Sundseth are great coaches. They add to the everyday excitement to get better."
What do you like best about Corvallis?
"I really like the fact that Corvallis is a college town. It creates a good atmosphere for success."
What do you like best about Trysting Tree?
"Trysting Tree is hosting the Pac-12 Championships this spring and I am looking forward to how pure they are going to get the course."
What is the best course you've played in college golf?
"My freshman year I played the Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tenn. For the NCAA national championship."
Who would be in your dream foursome?
"Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley."
If you could play a different college sport at Oregon State, what would it be and why?
"One hundred percent I would play basketball. I love basketball, and my dad played ball here at OSU. It would be cool to be a part of the basketball program."
What are your team and individual goals for the spring season?
"As a team, we are working toward Nationals which are played at Riviera in California. Individually, I want to break out of my own ways and have my best season yet."
