Oregon State Athletes Honored for Academic Achievement

April 23, 2012
CORVALLIS – The definition of a student-athlete per Wikipedia – a direct balance of a full-time student and a full-time athlete.
More than 500 individuals fall into that category at Oregon State University and a majority do it very successfully. So much so, that on April 16 OSU celebrated the 25th annual National Student-Athlete Day with its Everyday Champions Academic Achievement Dinner. OSU boasts a total of 173 student-athletes with a cumulative GPA of at least a 3.20.
“I’m very proud of the achievements our student-athletes have in the classroom,” Beaver Director of Athletics Bob De Carolis said. “We have had a tremendous athletic year to this point, but as importantly is our continued success we demonstrate in the classroom and community. Beaver Nation should be proud that our student-athletes are committed to being the very best in all facets of their collegiate experience and are outstanding ambassadors for this university.”
Twenty-three student-athletes were honored for having a cumulative GPA of 3.90 or higher, including graduating seniors John Swenson (soccer), Hannah McCulley (swimming), Lauren Morgenthaler (rowing), Leslie Urban (rowing), Marsha Lampi (track) and Casey Masterson (track).
A total of 63 student-athletes from OSU’s fall and winter sports have been selected to the Pac-12 Academic teams to this point in the year. The school’s 17 intercollegiate teams have also combined to perform 3,271 hours of community service.
The National Student-Athlete Day is a celebration of the outstanding achievements of individuals who have excelled in academics and athletics while having made significant contributions to their school and communities.
