Last Game
Jace Fry held No. 11 UCLA to six hits in a complete-game shutout Saturday as the Oregon State baseball team downed the Bruins, 3-0, to even the series at Goss Stadium. Fry needed just 107 pitches for his first career shutout, the final one going for a strikeout of Trevor Brown to end the game. Fry tossed six strikeouts and walked two, allowing the Bruins to place a runner at third just once. Fry became the first OSU freshman to throw a complete game shutout since Sam Gaviglio accomplished the feat May 22, 2009 at Stanford.
Back-To-Back-To-Back Shutouts
The Beavers last three games have ended via shutouts (5-0 at Portland, 4-0 loss to UCLA and 3-0 win over UCLA). That’s a first since the 1993 season when OSU shut out Washington (4-0), Portland (5-0) and Portland State (10-0).
ERA Is Dropping
Oregon State’s team earned run average stood at 3.81 after the club’s loss to Arizona State in the finale in Tempe. Since then, the Beavers have allowed 17 earned runs in 71 innings (2.15 ERA) to drop it to 3.45.
Smith Back Up
Tyler Smith went 3-for-4 Saturday to raise his batting average to .425, which now again leads the Pac-12. He surpassed UCLA’s Tyler Heineman, who went 0-for-3 to drop to .405. Smith is also batting .453 during conference play.
Quality Starts
The OSU starting staff has been on its game of recently, and with Jace Fry’s shutout Saturday, dropped its earned run average to 3.11 this season. Opponents are batting just .243 against the Beavers’ starters this season.
Good April
The Beavers are 9-4 in the month of April this season, and with five games remaining, need at least one win to guarantee a winning April for the second consecutive season and seventh time in nine years. OSU is 174-109 (.615) in the month under head coach Pat Casey.
