No. 18 Men's Crew Prepares For Race On Historic Charles River

April 20, 2012
CORVALLIS, Ore. - In its penultimate tune-up before the Pac-12 Championships, the 18th-ranked Oregon State men's varsity eight will make a grueling cross-country trek to tackle No. 10 Northeastern and Holy Cross on the Charles River in Boston, Mass. on Saturday morning.
"It's a big task to fly out to the East Coast and prepare for a race," Head Coach Steve Todd said of the long journey. "The preparation all week is almost as important as what we do on race day."
On race day, OSU's encounter with the 10th-ranked Huskies and the Crusaders, who are just outside the national top 20, will begin at 9:06 a.m. EST.
The Beavers' crew will again be Dan Thompson (coxswain), Ross Ellingwood, Daniel Werner, Clayton Ward, Wyatt Worrel, Jorgen Anderson, Bryce Fransen, Ty Louis and Chris Nofziger. Last weekend, that group defeated UC Davis and UC San Diego and came up a mere six seconds short of then-No. 4 Wisconsin at the Stanford Invitational in Redwood Shores, Calif.
"The varsity felt that last weekend they took some good steps forward and improved in some critical areas," Todd said. "We'll be looking to build on that tomorrow morning."
The trip to Boston will be the team's first to Beantown since 2010 when Oregon State lost to then-No. 7 Northeastern, but defeated Holy Cross by 14.2 seconds at the end of April. The East Coast experience will also serve the team well as it fights for its 17th berth in the IRA National Championships, which take place from May 31 to June 2 in Cherry Hill, N.J.
