Day 8 -- Kyle DeVan on His Future
April 16, 2012
Corvallis, Ore - If you have been to a Beaver football practice of late you've seen a lot of youth on the field, and that doesn't necessarily describe the student-athletes. It also is a description of the graduate assistant coaching staff and interns. Four of the youthful members of that roster are former Beavers, Mitch Meeuwsen (G.A./Defense), Trent Bray (G.A./Defense), Kyle DeVan (intern) and Alan Darlin (intern).
De Van joined the team prior to spring practice beginning earlier this month. The former Beaver center started 38 games during his career which spanned the 2003 (redshirt) through 2007 seasons. He was honored by the then Pac-10 Conference three times for his play as well as three years for his academic work. During DeVan's OSU tenure, including his redshirt season, OSU won 39 contests and four bowl games.
The Vacaville, Calif., native signed a free agent contract following his senior year with the Washington Redskins and after being waived three times (twice by the New York Jets) found a home with the Indianapolis Colts. He started 21 games for the Colts and four more for the Philadelphia Eagles in a three-year span, including the 2010 Super Bowl for Indianapolis.
Prior to being picked up by the Colts he was a substitute school teacher in Vacaville.
DeVan hopes to use his intern-to-graduate assistant role this season as a means to a full-time coaching position in the future. NCAA rules change this summer as Football Bowl Subdivision schools will be allowed to employ four graduate assistants (the current allowable number is two), of which he will be one.
The OSU video staff had a chance to catch up with DeVan after practice Monday.
Make sure to join Beaver Nation at Fan Fest April 28 at Reser Stadium. Season ticket holders have until April 20 to renew while new season ticket deposits will be accepted beginning at Fan Fest with a $50 non-refundable deposit per seat.
