Women's Golf Returns To Course In Final Tourney Before Pac-12's

April 13, 2012
CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State women's golf team will tee it up in the second annual Pacific Coast Intercollegiate at Half Moon Bay, Calif., on Monday and Tuesday, its final tuneup before the Pac-12 Women's Golf Championships.
The two-day, 54-hole tournament will be played at the par-72, 6,034-yard Half Moon Bay Golf Links Ocean Course and is the Beavers' final tournament of the season before competing in the Pac-12 Championships at the Palouse Ridge Golf Club in Pullman, Wash., April 27-29.
Teams will play 36 holes on Monday beginning with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. with the third and final round on Tuesday with tee times off the first and 10th holes at 7 a.m.
The 15-team field includes seven top-25 teams in No. 1 UCLA, No. 3 USC, No. 14 California, No. 16 Oklahoma State, No. 19 Arizona, No. 21 Oregon and No. 23 UC Davis according golfstat.com. The Beavers are ranked No. 53 in the most recent rankings.
"We have been working hard at practice to prepare for this event," Oregon State head coach Risë Alexander said. "We have been paying particular attention to putting and hitting shots that will simulate pressure situations in tournament rounds. We have been playing well all spring with the exception of ASU (PING/ASU Invitational) so I expect their performance to continue to reflect solid improvement as we head towards postseason."
THE FIELD: Oregon State, Arizona, California, UC Davis, UC Irvine, Fresno State, Long Beach State, Oklahoma State, Oregon, San Jose State, Stanford, UCLA, USC, Washington and Washington State.
"Golf is so unpredictable," Alexander said. "I know how hard they are working and how focused they need to be. Weather can affect scores, but that is where we can make up some ground. We have been playing well in windy conditions and that bodes well for Half Moon Bay Golf Links. It is a course on the Pacific Ocean so wind is always a factor. My prediction would be that they will give it their all and we will have to wait and see where that puts us in this very strong field of competition. Oregon State is in the middle of the pack with eight teams ranked higher than us and six below us. So if we finish in the top-8, we have improved our chances to go to postseason. Our goal is much higher than that, but that is the reality of it."
BEAVERS' LINEUP: Oregon State will go with its usual lineup with senior Whitney French, junior Rachael Fischer, sophomores Seshia Telles and Lauren Sewell and freshman Anica Yoo.
"Seshia continues to be our best player day in and day out because she is determined and focused -- two qualities that produce successful results, "Alexander said. "She moved up 21 spots the last day at ASU in individual results. This exemplifies her never quit attitude. She is capable of leading us to a successful event. I would say that everyone traveling this weekend has the capability to have an outstanding event. They have all proven it at one point or other in our season. If they can fire on all cylinders at once, we will have an outstanding result."
LAST TIME OUT: Oregon State shot a 24-over 308 in the final round of the PING/ASU Invitational and finished in 17th place at the two-day, 54-hole tournament at Tempe, Ariz. The Beavers finished the tournament with a 75-over 306-313-308--927 at the par-72, 6,121-yard ASU Karsten Golf Course.
Telles posting the team's best score with 9-over 74-78-73-- 225 to finish in a tie for 41st place. French finished in a tie for 60th with an 12-over 76-78-74--228, while Yoo shot a 18-over 235 and finished in a tie for 78th. Sewell finished in a tie for 85th with a 25-over 239 and Fischer finished 89th with 29-over 245.
TOURNAMENT HISTORY: Oregon won the inaugural Pacific Coast Intercollegiate last season with 27-over 891 and Katerina Ruzickova of Texas A&M took home medalist honors with a 2-over 218.
