Last Game
Tyler Smith hit his first home run of the season and the Oregon State baseball team opened its two-game midweek series at Nevada with a 6-5 win over the Wolfpack. Smith hit the first pitch he saw from starter Troy Marks in the third inning over the left field fence, driving in three and putting the Beavers ahead for good after OSU found itself down two runs early. Nevada made it interesting, scoring three runs in the eighth off reliever Matt Boyd. Closer Tony Bryant came in with one down and the Wolfpack managed to load the bases before Austin Byler struck out.
Non-Conference Action
The Beavers’ win Monday was the team’s 13th against non-conference opponents this season. Oregon State has won three straight and eight of their last nine games against non-conference foes.
Smith + Rodriguez = Streaks
Tyler Smith extended his hit streak to 12 games Monday and is now tied with Ryan Dunn for the longest of the season by a Beaver. Jake Rodriguez, meanwhile, had two hits to extend his to a season-long five games. That also happens to be a career long for the sophomore.
OSU Likes Reno
The Beavers’ win Monday was the team’s seventh in eight games played all-time in Reno, the lone blemish coming in the 2008 series opener. Just like that game, Nevada took a 2-0 lead after one but on Monday, OSU scored the next six before Nevada posted three runs in the eighth.
Sneaking Up On Berberet
Michael Conforto drove in a run on a single in the seventh Monday and that constituted his 37th RBI of the season. That’s two shy of equaling last season’s team leader, Parker Berberet, and extends Conforto’s Pac-12 leading total. It also bumpis him into a tie for 10th nationally.
Two Milestones Ahead
Pat Casey needs just three wins for 600 in his career at Oregon State. That will make him the 15th coach in Pac-12 history to reach that plateau. OSU also needs four wins to have 1,000 away from Corvallis all-time.
Singles
• OSU has won its last two games against teams from the WAC. The Beavers went 1-2 against WAC schools in 2011.
• Taylor Starr became the seventh Beaver to start a game this season. OSU had six pitchers make a start in 2011.
• The Beavers did not commit an error Monday and are 5-2 when achieving that this season.
