FRESNO, Calif. - The Oregon State men's golf team played through inclement weather at the Fresno State Lexus Classic on Tuesday and held on to capture the 35th team title in school history and its second title of the season.
Senior Casey King shot a team-best 1-over 73 on Tuesday to move up the leader board and tie teammate senior Jonnie Motomochi for 12th place. King finished with a 2-over 74-71-73--218 and Motomochi carded a 2-over 71-71-76--218 at the par-72, 6,765-yard Fort Washington Country Club.
The Beavers shot a 20-over 380 on Tuesday but had built an eight-stroke lead after 36 holes on Monday and held on for the win with a 7-over 355-352-380--1087 at the two-day, 54-hole tournament that featured 16 teams. Washington State finished second (13-over 1,093), San Diego was third (16-over 1,096), Pacific finished fourth (19-over 1,099) and Arizona rounded out the top-five (20-over 1,100).
Senior Alex Moore and junior Matt Rawitzer finished in a tie for 14th with a 3-over 219, junior Nick Sherwood finished a stroke back with a 4-over 220 for tie for 22nd and junior Nick Chianello shot a 6-over 222 for a tie for 33rd.
The Beavers won the team title in the final event of the fall season when it defeated Nevada on the first playoff hole at the Pacific Invitational in Stockton, Calif. It was their first since winning the 2009 Giustina Memorial Classic in Corvallis, Ore., and their first in a tournament outside Corvallis since they won the rain-shortened Husky Invitational in Bremerton, Wash., in the fall of 2007. The last time Oregon State won a three-round tournament somewhere other than Corvallis was the fall of 2004 at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational in Fairfax, Calif.
