STANFORD, Calif. - Junior Nick Chianello fired a 4-under 66 on Friday, his best-ever round at Oregon State, and sits in a tie for second place after the first round of the 17-team U.S. Intercollegiate in Stanford, Calif.
The Beavers are tied for 11th place at the three-day, 54-hole tournament after finishing Friday's opening round with a 7-over 287 at the par-70, 6,742-yard Stanford Golf Course.
"Great playing by Nick Chianello today," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "We have felt he could be someone who could really shoot some low scores and it was great to see him do it today. He made it look so easy and hit some great iron shots. He really could have shot a few less much easier."
"For the rest of the team, we need to get the ball in the fairways on the par-5's, especially on the first hole. Nick birdied all three par-5's and that is what you need to do on this course. If you can't get the ball in the fairway with the rough as long as it is, it makes it very difficult to get many birdie looks."

Chianello, who is in his first season at Oregon State after transferring from the University of Portland, shot a 3-under 68 at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational back in October in his first tournament with the Beavers. His career-best round is an 8-under 64 at the Palouse Cougar Collegiate in Pullman, Wash., during his sophomore season at Portland.
The Gresham, Ore., native started on the 10th hole and had six birdies, including three consecutive at the par-4 15th, par-5 16th and par-3 17th holes, to go along with two bogies. He trails clubhouse leader Rufie Fessler of Fresno State by one stroke and is tied with Matt Hansen of UC Davis and Daniel Miernicki of Oregon.
Chianello's best 54-hole collegiate finish is a tie for fifth during his stint at the University of Portland and his best as a Beaver is a tie for 15th at the Bandon Dunes Championship. He has four career top-10 finishes.
The rest of Oregon State's team didn't fare as well as senior Alex Moore shot a 3-over 73, senior Jonnie Motomochi and junior Nick Sherwood each carded a 4-over 74 and senior Casey King finished with an 11-over 81.
The second round begins at 8 a.m. on Saturday with a shotgun start. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
