EUGENE, Ore. - Senior Alex Moore and junior Nick Chianello each shot a 1-over 73 on Tuesday to lead the Oregon State men's golf team to a fourth place finish at the 23rd Oregon Duck Invitational in Eugene, Ore., for its fourth top-five finish of the season.
Oregon State concluded the two-day, 54-hole tournament with a 16-over 295-289-296--880 at the par-72, 7,007-yard Eugene Country Club to finish fourth in the 14-team field. The Beavers now have two team titles, an outright fourth place finish and a tie for fourth in their seven tournaments thus far this season.
Moore played solidly with a birdie on the par-5 13th hole and two bogeys, while Chianello had a team-best three birdies to go along with four bogeys as each golfer carded a 1-over 73 in wet, rainy conditions on Tuesday. Chianello tied for 24th overall with a 5-over 75-73-73--221 and Moore moved up the leader board to finish in a tie for 38th with a 9-over 77-75-73--225.
Senior Jonnie Motomochi and junior Nick Sherwood both posted top-20 finishes as they tied for 19th place with a 4-over 220 with Motomochi going 75-70-75 and Sherwood finishing 72-72-76. Senior Casey King wrapped up the tournament with a 6-over 73-74-75--222 to finish in a tie for 27th.
Three Oregon State golfers competed as individuals with junior Matt Rawitzer finishing the best among the group with a 7-over 77-74-72--223 for a tie for 32nd. Freshman Scott Kim finished in a tie for 58th with a 13-over 78-77-74--229 and junior Jeff Petroff shot a 19-over 76-78-81--235 for a tie for 71st.
Host Oregon won the team title with a 17-under 284-279-284--847 on its home course, while Long Beach State finished second with a 15-under 280-284-285--849 and Saint Mary's was third with a 1-under 287-289-287--863. Andrew Vijarro of Oregon won medalist honors with a 6-under 71-70-69--210 to finish ahead of two of his teammates.
The Beavers have two days off before returning to the links to compete at the U.S. Intercollegiate, a three-day, 54-hole tournament that begins Friday at the Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, Calif.
