EUGENE, Ore. - Junior Nick Sherwood carded a pair of even-par 72's and senior Jonnie Motomochi fired a 2-under 70 in the afternoon round to lead the Oregon State men's golf team to fourth place after 36 holes of play on Monday at the 23rd Oregon Duck Invitational in Eugene, Ore.
The Beavers knocked six strokes off their morning round with a 1-over 289 in the afternoon at the par-72, 7,007-yard Eugene Country Club to sit in fourth place with an 8-over 295-289--584 and trail only No. 14 Oregon (13-under 563), Long Beach State (12-under 564) and No. 34 Saint Mary's (even-par 576) in the 14-team field.
"We finished well," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "I was proud of the way our guys hung in there and finished. We played much better in the afternoon when we got more out of the round and didn't give away as many shots as we did in the morning."

On the individual leader board, Sherwood is tied for ninth, Motomochi is tied for 17th, senior Casey King is tied for 24th, junior Nick Chianello is tied for 27th and senior Alex Moore is tied for 50th.
"Nick Sherwood was rock solid all day at even-par," Reehoorn said. "Jonnie birdied his final two holes of the day, which was huge for us, and Casey got a bad break on a par-5 but made some birdies to finish. We just need to have more rounds under-par to be at the top of the leader board."
Sherwood was 1-under through the first 10 holes of the day with birdies on the par-4 first, par-5 eighth and par-4 10th holes, before finishing with three bogies and a birdie over the final eight holes of the morning round. He got off to a rough start in the afternoon with bogies on three of the first four holes that sandwiched a birdie on the par-3 second, but bounced back with birdies on the par-5 sixth, par-5 eighth and par-4 17th holes with just one bogey over the final 14 holes to finish with an even-par 72-72--144.
Motomochi finished the day with a 1-over 75-70--145 with one birdie and four bogeys in the morning round before catching fire in the afternoon when he birdied three of his final four holes - the par-4 17th, par-4 first and par-3 second holes - to finish with the Beavers' best round of the day that also included a tap-in birdie on the 192-yard, par-3 fifth.
King had a similar opening round as Sherwood with birdies on the par-4 fourth, par-5 sixth, par-5 eighth and par-4 14th holes, to go along with five bogies, and finished the morning 18 with a 1-over 73. He was 4-over through his first 10 holes in the afternoon with one birdie, three bogies and a double-bogey but carded birdies on the par-4 15th and par-4 17th holes to finish with a 3-over 73-74--147.
Chianello had four birdies in his afternoon round but took three bogeys and a double to finish with a 1-over 73 after opening with two birdies and five bogies in the morning round to finish with a 4-over 148, while Moore struggled on a course he has dominated in the past with an 8-over 77-75--152.
Oregon State golfers playing as individuals include junior Matt Rawitzer (7-over 77-74--151), junior Jeff Petroff (10-over 76-78--154) and freshman Scott Kim (11-over 78-77--155).
"I thought the course played pretty tough today," Reehoorn said. "The par-3's are so tough; it's hard to judge the wind on those holes. The weather is supposed to be really nasty tomorrow so we have to be ready to come out and battle it out."
The final round of the two-day, 54-hole tournament begins at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday with a shotgun start and live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
